How Chemotherapy Suite, Registered Nurses (RN) support our teams at Grand River Hospital:
The Oncology nurse will be involved in all aspects of the oncology program, including patient/family assessment, teaching and administering chemotherapy, and providing supportive and palliative care. As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the oncology nurse will participate in the development and implementation of patient treatment plans; quality improvement processes and will support education and research initiatives. Contributes to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors. Support and promote collaborative team practices. Our Oncology RN’s also:
- Utilize evidence-based practices and analysis of outcomes to identify opportunities for improvement and promote professional accountability
- Act as role models to our nursing and support team members
- Effectively manage unit resources
- Consult with our multidiscipline teams to ensure our patients receive the highest level of care and support
At Grand River Hospital, our Chemotherapy Suite, Registered Nurses (RNs) have:
- Current Certificate of Competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Completion of Oncology Foundations Course from the deSouza Institute preferred but enrollment acceptable
- Completion of Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Oncology Course from deSouza Institute mandatory
- Demonstrated proficiency in IV initiation and Venous Access Device management mandatory
- Canadian Nurses Association certification as a Certified Oncology Nurse (CONC) preferred; however consideration will be given to candidates who are willing to obtain (must be completed within 3 years of hire).
- Minimum of 1 year recent experience in oncology nursing
- Demonstrated experience in working within a multi-disciplinary team
- Working with a variety of computer systems and software applications
- Participation in education and clinical training programs
- Principles of oncology and adult learning
- Therapeutic communication techniques
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to work independently
- Knowledge in patient-focused care and the needs of the oncology patient population
