Job Summary:
Syl Apps Youth Center is located in Oakville, Ontario, at Trafalgar and the QEW. SAYC is licensed by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services and is a not for profit organization providing paediatric mental health services in Ontario for more than 40 years. SAYC is a 24/7 facility with youth living on site in a secure setting. Youth ages 9-18years old are admitted to the facility in one of two ways:
- Secure Treatment process - youth who are at significant risk to themselves or others in the community, are referred and screened and admitted through Family Court Orders from all regions of the province.
- Ontario Review Board (under the Criminal Code of Canada) youth who are involved in the youth justice system who have been found not fit or not criminally responsible.
SAYC is part of Halton Region and there is a section 23 school on site that functions as part of the Halton Board of Education. The youth attend school and receive therapeutic and mental health supports daily.
Summary of Roles and Responsibilities:
As a Registered Nurse at Syl Apps Youth Center (SAYC), you will be part of a dynamic Wellness Team. You will practice in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards and Kinark policies and procedures to support the delivery of client-centered care. You will use your knowledge and skills in mental health nursing, health assessment and promotion, and child/youth development to assist youth at SAYC to achieve their health and wellness goals. You will be working as part of the interdisciplinary team, collaborating on care plans and sharing expertise to optimize the care for clients and families.
This position is covered by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union on behalf of its local 213. Internal applicants will be considered first.
Your responsibilities include:
• Comprehensive physical, emotional and developmental assessments.
• Medication Administration.
• Individual and group health promotion and teaching as needed.
• Liaise and consult with community partners including local hospitals, physicians and other medical specialties.
Other responsibilities include (but not limited to):
- Overseeing youth admissions and discharges including physical and developmental checks.
- Organizing and participating in mental health or physical consultations.
- Safety and Risk assessments as needed.
- Health Education and health promotion to facilitate a healthy lifestyle, including coping with possible medication side effects.
- Provide education and support to interdisciplinary team members as needed.
Qualification and Skills
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing or equivalent.**
• Registered Nurse with no restrictions to practice with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• Proof of Personal Professional Liability Insurance.
• Pediatric and/or mental health experience.
• Knowledge of normal child/youth growth and development.
• Excellent nursing physical assessment and management skills.
• Exceptional organizational/triaging skills.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with computers, including: Word, Power Point, Outlook, Excel, Chrome, ect.
• Team player and lifelong learner.
• Fluency in French language (written and oral) an asset.
