The 6 South Surgical Trauma Unit, located in Hamilton's downtown Hamilton General Hospital is a fast paced, 35 bed unit including 6 step down beds with cardiac monitoring. This distinctive unit cares for a variety of patient populations including: trauma, general surgery, ENT, and urology patients. On 6 South the patient population is multi-system, often with high- acuity, creating an environment that is fast-paced and dynamic. The regional trauma program serves the community of Hamilton as well as surrounding areas.

  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nursing of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
  • Step down course, ECG monitoring education and experience recommended.
  • Recent (within the last two years) acute surgical nursing experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Nursing Care Planning process
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize problem solving and critical thinking techniques effectively in a general surgery/orthopedic/trauma setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced, high turnover environment
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and decision making in assessment, problem identification and problem solving
  • Evidence of commitment to professional practice and ongoing professional development


Our 6 South nurses are set up for success and go through a comprehensive onsite orientation program, led by experienced health care professionals and educators. As a member of the multidiscipline healthcare team, the Registered Nurse coordinates and evaluates patient care and provides nursing care according to the standards of practice for Registered Nurses. All Registered Nurses on 6 South practice in both the ward and step down unit setting. In partnership with the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department at HGH, 6 South provides opportunities to grow your skills and expertise and prides itself on a fast, friendly and welcoming environment with an emphasis on the wellbeing and mentorship of our nurses.
