OVERVIEW
The Director of Nursing Practice and Education (Director) is a Nursing management and leadership role, responsible for Nursing practice and education across the Hospital. The Director acts as a resource, advocate, facilitator and coordinator in matters of Nursing professional practice and education. Within this role, the Director in alignment with the CNE, provides leadership in creating a vision and strategic plan for the Nursing profession, develops the Nursing profession and the practice of Nursing, establishes and maintains a collaborative intra and interprofessional practice environment. Works collaboratively to develop, implement and manage a corporate professional practice strategy aligned with corporate goals, and strategic objectives;
The Director will have a primary reporting relationship to the Chief Nursing Executive. The Director will play a key role in the development, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based interventions and knowledge translation and dissemination activities aligned with Michael Garron Hospital's strategic directions and organizational research structure

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Professional Practice Consultation and Committee Representation
- Addresses management issues and concerns to ensure hospital-wide professional practice;
o Advises on, and provides leadership to, initiatives related to Nursing practice, including:
o Inter-professional practice;
o Communication among and between health professionals and management on matters related to Nursing professional practice;
o Education and research;
o Quality improvement;
o Professional advocacy;
o Professional standards and regulatory requirements
o Strategic planning and other corporate level initiatives;
- Partner with the Director responsible for Inter-professional Practice, to ensure a common approach to clinical practice standards, practice changes andother practice efforts and advance an inter-professional team based care model as guided by the Chief Nursing Executive
- Promotes a culture of reflective practice by providing profession specific leadership and mentoring in an evidence based continuouslearning and research based practice environment, including:
- Providing professional governance on the quality of professional practice delivered by nursing staff;
- Identifying, leading and monitoring initiatives related to the professional practicedelivered by nursing staff;
- Facilitating the advancement of professional practice;
- Providing leadership and acting as a resource for internal and external stakeholders;
- Coaching, mentoring and guiding practice development for the corporate Professional practice and Education team and as required, frontline line nursing staff;
- Works in collaboration with Clinical Program Directors to advance nursing practice in providing safe, high quality, person and family centered care.
- Advises program leadership and other staff on matters of professional practice and professional and student education, as it relates to nursing practice;
- Assists with review of patient complaints and concerns;
- Represents or ensures representation of Nursing on internal committees, working groups or task forces;
- Acts as the primary liaison and contact internally and externally for information and consultation relevant to Nursing;
- Provides nursing mentorship to the Clinical Resource Leaders in collaboration with Clinical Program Directors through a dual reporting structure
- Co-chairs Health Professions Advisory Committee & CPEC
- Chairs Nursing Professional Practice Council and other committees as required
Professional Practice Structures & Professional Care Delivery Model
- Facilitates effective Nursing and inter-professional participation, in addressing and resolving Nursing professional practice issues. This includes establishing appropriate structures and forums
for inter-professional and profession specific collaboration in addressing issues related to Nursing professional practice;
- Partner with the Director responsible for Inter-professional Practice, to ensure a common approach to clinical practice standards, practice changes and other practice efforts as guided by the Chief Nursing Executive
- In partnership with the CNE and clinical program directors, contributes in the philosophical underpinning and characteristics of the development, implementation and evaluation of a Professional Care Delivery Model for Nursing;
- Promotes and fosters a shared governance approach to professional practice throughout the Hospital;
- Ensures that the professional welfare of the staff is promoted, and that the role and work of Nursing staff is valued in a manner that is consistent with the mission, vision and strategic directions of the Hospital;
- Facilitates and provides oversight to the development and revision of Nursing related professional practice documents including: clinical protocols, policy & procedures, clinical practice guidelines, medical directives, pre-printed orders.
Professional Development Strategies
- Develops and executes strategies to build and foster an effective team environment and a culture built on respect, trust, wellbeing and lifelong learning for staff, ensuing appropriate systems are in place to facilitate succession planning and appropriate management of vacancy;
- Provides advancement opportunities for future leaders, acting as a mentor for staff to facilitate development/attainment of leadership skills and technical competencies for the provision of excellence in work activities;
- Facilitates professional development of staff across the Hospital;
- Establishes an educational infrastructure that contributes to a seamless continuum of education, from novice (orientation) to expert;
- Develops and implements a framework for tracking professional development and continuing education of Nursing staff;
- Promotes anenvironment that supports evidence and knowledge-based practice;
- Develops mentorship and coaching programs and opportunities for new staff;
- Explores and secures funding for professional development.
Knowledge Translation and Dissemination
- Leads knowledge translation and transfer strategies, to enhance Nursing scope of practice and ensure Nursing standards of Practice;
- Enhances the scientific base of clinical practice of Nursing, by developing and supporting knowledge translationstrategies around evidence-based practice and research utilization;
- Supports the implementation of Best Practice Guidelines for Nursing across the organization;
- Interprets, communicates and disseminates research findings to support patient care,andrecommends evidence-based policy and practice changes;
- Disseminates knowledge through scholarly and professional venues, including published papers in journals and reports, and posters and oral presentations at conferences;
- Contributes to the development and delivery of research and evidence based practice related education programs.
Regulatory Requirements
- Ensures that professional regulation is interpreted into policy, and that education programs are developed and delivered to professional staff regarding professional regulation;
- Acts as a resource for Nursing staff and leadership on regulatory and professional requirements, and changes to scope of practice and competency;
- Acts as a liaison with the regulatory College andProfessional Associations;
- Remains current on changes and trends in the Nursing profession;
- Facilitates the interpretation of standards of practice of College and professional associations and integration into practice of nursing staff.
Quality Assurance and Continuous Quality Improvement
- Promotes quality improvement initiatives and assessment of outcomes on a Nursing-specific and inter-professional basis;
- Facilitates the development of a quality monitoring system for Nursing;
- Monitors data collection and audit processes related to Nursing-specific practice;
- Assists Nursing staff to initiate and participate in program-based inter-professional quality and risk management initiatives.
Performance Evaluation and Standards ofPractice
- Ensures that Nursing has mechanisms of accountability in place to monitor and promote standards for Nursing practice in collaboration with clinical program directors, including: scope of practice and roles, credentialing, controlled acts under the Regulated Health Professions Acts, continuous professional learning, and evidence based practice;
- Ensures that an appropriate system of performance management and planning for Nursing staff is developed and implemented, that incorporates standards of practice, core competencies, clinical competencies and advanced Nursing competencies;
- Ensures a process for review of the RN/RPN role, scope of practice, accountability and appropriateness for the hospital, of any new Nursing relatedroles;
- Provides support to Nursing staff in meeting requirements of College's Quality Assurance Program;
- Ensures availability of clinical expertise for consultation, as required;
- Assists Program Management with the development of a probationary appraisal process for new Nursing staff.
Partnerships and Academics
- Coordinates academic affairs and liaise with academic organizations with regard to undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate education programs and student placements;
- Cultivates both internal and external partnerships to synergize clinical practice and education activities;
- Supports the supervision and guidance of Nursing students;
EDUCATION
- Master's degree in Nursing or equivalent;
- Member in good standing of a professional regulatory body.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Current experience in a progressive academic health sciences centre, with a minimum of five years in field of Nursing practice/education and academic experience;
- Minimum of three years' experience in management role;
- Appointment, or eligibility for appointment, with the University of Toronto;
- Ability to shape and implement a vision, and manage organizational and system change necessary to improve health through innovation in practice;
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and standards of practice of Nursing;
- Demonstrated excellent facilitation, conflict resolution and communication skills;
- Commitment to fostering a dynamic learning environment in the Hospital;
- Evidence of effective teaching;
- Strong track record of establishing external relationships, which facilitate and enhance the image of Nursing at a regional and national level;
- Demonstrated willingness and ability to work collaboratively with professional colleagues, within and acrossprofessions;
