Sinai Health is looking for an adept and trusted nursing leader who is aligned to our purpose to join our team as the Patient Care Manager for Labour and Delivery, Women's & Infants' Health at our Mount Sinai Hospital Campus.

As the PCM you will work closely with obstetricians, maternal fetal medicine specialists, fellows, residents, family doctors, midwives and dedicated anaesthetists. As a collaborative member of the nursing leadership team, you are responsible for the administrative operations, clinical practice, human resources and financial management of Labour & Delivery. Your leadership is consistent with Magnet® principles and values. Care is provided to both low risk and high risk women in a Labour, Delivery and Recovery (LDR) model. Both elective and urgent Cesarean Sections are completed in the labour and delivery operative procedure rooms and are managed by the PCM. The PCM is supported by a medical lead, Administrative Coordinator, Clinical Coordinators, Clinical Nurse Specialist and a Clinical Educator.

 

About this team:

The Labour and Delivery Unit is a tertiary level care centre in Toronto. We deliver approximately 6,500 patients and their families each year. Our patients are antenatal and perinatal. We provide both low and high risk obstetrical care. Our space is comprised of 19 birthing suites, 7 Triage beds, 5 Operating Rooms and 5 ODU beds within an Observation Day Unit (ODU).

 

In this role you will:

  • Maintain standards of nursing practice and management of patient care through creation of an environment conducive to growth and development of staff and excellence in nursing practice
  • Interpret and foster the philosophy, goals and standards of the Department of Nursing and the corporate mission, vision and values
  • Establish and monitor annual goals and objectives for the unit consistent with the provision of high quality and safe care
  • Participate in the strategic planning process to drive organizational change and optimization of human resources programming and organizational development
  • Take a lead role in creating a culture of safety, risk mitigation, quality, and service at the unit level and across the portfolio, to improve practices and service delivery
  • Develop, lead and manage program improvement initiatives based on quality data monitoring and utilizing appropriate quality improvement processes
  • Develop and maintain a valid and reliable workload measurement tool for assigned clinical areas
  • Encourage staff participation in quality improvement activities for the unit and preparing quality improvement reports
  • Collaborate with the Labour and Delivery Physician leader and Clinical Nurse Specialist in the development and monitoring of the quality plan and annual business unit scorecard
  • Implement the approved quality plan; encourage staff participation in quality improvement/safety initiatives for the unit and prepares safety and quality improvement reports
  • Be accountable for the quality of care and service provided on the unit
  • Participate in the programmatic development of the clinical area, preparing necessary business cases as required
  • Provide leadership in the provision of Patient and Family Centred Care
  • Manage finances through effective budgetary planning, monitoring, controlling and operations at the unit level
  • Facilitate and provide leadership for resource utilization at the unit and programmatic level; develop business cases for required human or physical resources as needed
  • Provide leadership in fostering and promoting a collaborative practice environment that is based on mutual respect among all team members
  • Recruit, develop and manage staff; completing regular employee performance appraisals and supporting the development of learning plans
  • Conduct human resource planning which includes recruitment and retention strategies
  • Foster effective labour relations through knowledgeable interpretation and implementation of collective agreements
  • Work collaboratively with the Clinical Educator and Clinical Nurse Specialist to ensure staff receive appropriate orientation and ongoing development; develops staff in clinical and leadership skills
  • Encourage and participate in nursing research and the utilization of research findings
  • Work with other members of the nursing leadership team to support the implementation of evidence-based practice and ensuring the dissemination of research findings to inform nursing practice and improve patient outcomes
  • Participate as a member/leader of departmental and corporate committees and teams
  • Establish, promote and maintain good public relations through effective communication within the organization
  • Communicate effectively using appropriate lines within the organization
  • Respond as PCM on-call as needed
  • Perform other duties related to the position as required

Job Requirements:

Mandatory

  • Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) in good standing
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing (Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing with a Master’s Degree in a related discipline may be considered)
  • 5-10 years recent related clinical experience
  • Applicants with proven equivalent recent and related training and experience may be considered


Preferred

  • Minimum 5 years’ recent nursing management experience
  • Labour and delivery experience


Skills and Knowledge

  • Respected and progressive leader with the ability to inspire, motivate and develop a high-performance team
  • Significant experience in quality improvement; success leading, monitoring and evaluating process/systems to identify and achieve efficiencies and quality outcomes
  • Proven experience in data interpretation and analysis as a means to support strategic decision making and fiscal accountability
  • Advanced understanding of the value of information technology and experience in the implementation and integration of strategies for systems and technologies
  • Proven experience successfully leading and facilitating change with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; professional, diplomatic and confident with a proven ability to work with individuals across all levels of the organization and external stakeholders
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the proven ability to manage competing demands
  • Excellent decision making, problem recognition, problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Models collaborative, cross-portfolio engagement to build consensus and create solutions to complex issues
  • Experience leading and/or supporting program development initiatives that align departmental goals with organizational strategic direction
  • Membership in professional nursing and other related organizations
  • Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution
  • Commitment to collaborative practice
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
