OVERVIEW

Registered Practical Nurses possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, procedural skills and professional attitudes, which are directed to effective patient and family-centered care. RPNs apply these competencies to collect and interpret information, make appropriate nursing clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration with the Registered Nurse, RPNs apply these competencies within the boundaries of their knowledge, skill and judgment, personal expertise, the healthcare setting and the patient's preferences. The role is guided by codes of ethics and a commitment to clinical competence, their care is characterized by up-to-date, resource-efficient clinical practice as well as with effective communication in partnership with patients and families and other health care providers.

EDUCATION

- Registered Practical Nursing diploma with current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current BCLS required.
- 2- 3 years of recent work experience in blood procurement required.
- Certificate in blood procurement or equivalent.

QUALIFICATIONS

- Must be prepared to work in all areas of the Medicine Health Service.
- Demonstrated expertise in blood procurement and ECG procurement practices.
- Demonstrated expertise with challenging procurement.
- Demonstrated experience with Cerner Powerchart, this includes order entry, order modification and results.
- Demonstrated understanding of the SOFT LIS system.
- Proficient computer skills required, for example, MS Office.
- Demonstrates ability to effectively participate with interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively.
- Demonstrates use of Core Service Standards.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a Team.
- Demonstrates an understanding of Quality Management System.
- Demonstrates an understanding of Laboratory Accreditation process.
- Flexibility to adapt to a dynamic work environment.
- Demonstrates excellent organizational skills.
- Demonstrates a commitment to pursuing educational goals.
- Demonstrates a commitment to participate in quality improvement initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability to work to full scope of practice as defined by unit/service.
- Good work and attendance record required.
