Margaret Bahen Hospice, part of the Better Living family of organizations, has a casual opening for the position of Personal Support Worker. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing assistance with all activities of daily life, as well as the end of life care to Residents and their Caregivers. PSW will work as part of the transdisciplinary team to implement the plan of care; to provide a home-like environment; emotional, social and spiritual support; and personal care that reflects the individual needs and preferences of each Resident.

The successful candidates for this position must possess the following qualifications:

  • Personal Support Worker Diploma from an accredited college.
  • Post graduate training in hospice or palliative care preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years related work experience in community healthcare, long-term care or hospital setting. Preference is given to individuals with work experience in hospice or palliative care.
  • Successful completion of Vulnerable Sector Screening within one month of employment.


The successful candidate for this position must be able to:

  • Assist with duties related to the admission or discharge of a Resident as directed by the nursing team.
  • Assist with and/or carry out the plan of care in a manner that ensures the well-being, safety, and comfort of the Resident.
  • Utilize observation, communication, and physical assessment skills to recognize, respond to and report changes in Resident need to the nursing team.
  • Effectively utilize the Resident Record to carry out the plan of care and communicate with the transdisciplinary team through timely and accurate documentation of progress notes, observations and actions are taken.
  • Provide personal care to the Resident, according to their preferences, including but not limited to bathing, oral hygiene, dressing, peri care, grooming, toileting, continence care, and skincare.
  • Provide the Resident with assistance, as required, to move throughout the hospice, using the plan of care to ensure transfers, lifts and other physical assistance is provided safely.
  • Prepare, deliver, and assist with meals as requested or required by the Resident; utilize the plan of care to ensure support is safely provided; and report and difficulties with chewing or swallowing to the nursing team.
  • Ensure on a daily basis that rooms are clean and tidied in accordance with the preferences of the Resident and their Caregivers, high touch areas are disinfected, waste containers are emptied.
  • Complete terminal cleans of Resident rooms in accordance with best practice standards and the policies of the hospice as required.
  • Ensure that common and/or storage areas are left clean, orderly and stocked for the next shift.
  • Provide support and direction to hospice volunteers engaged in the provision of direct care to Residents and caregivers, assessing the appropriate degree to which the volunteer will be involved in the Resident's non-medical care.
  • Seek out opportunities to spend time with Residents and Caregivers to support their emotional, social and spiritual needs.
  • Participate in transdisciplinary meetings, rounds, family conferences and committees as requested or required.
  • Have the physical ability to perform the duties of the position. Which include regularly: standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing and pulling.
