The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at McMaster Children's Hospital is a robust department, comprised of 12 level 3 critical care beds, and 4 level 2 beds. The unit routinely provides specialized care to children with complex medical, surgical, oncologic, and traumatic problems utilizing a collaborative approach. The PICU also supports a Pediatric Critical Care Response team and a newly formed Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team, providing care to children locally and across southern Ontario. The interprofessional PICU team aims to provide family centered care with a strong focus on evidence based best practice and continuous quality improvement initiatives.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for the PICU (part of the Child and Youth Acute Health Care Portfolio of McMaster Children's Hospital) will join a dynamic provider care team that includes Pediatric Intensivists, Pediatric Critical Care fellows, and resident trainees. This provider group works seamlessly with a comprehensive interprofessional PICU team to treat all disorders affecting critically ill pediatric patients
The NP will provide leadership and promote excellence in pediatric critical care through expert clinical practice. The NP, with support and oversight from the physician group, will manage and coordinate the full spectrum of patient care activities in both the level 2 and level 3 Pediatric Critical Care Units. The PICU NP will receive education, skills training, and mentorship in order to eventually grow and function as a specialized advanced pediatric critical care practitioner.

In addition to direct clinical care, the NP role includes activities related to education, research, quality improvement, and leadership. Accordingly, the NP will participate in initiating and/or leading programs, presentations, publications, evaluations, research initiatives and other system changes to contribute to the ongoing enhancement of critical care at McMaster Children's Hospital.

The NP will report to the Director, Child and Youth Acute Health Care Program, McMaster Children's Hospital, and the Chief of Interprofessional Practice.
