Position Title: Registered Practical Nurse (Casual Part-Time)

OVERVIEW:
Ridley College currently has an exciting opportunity for a Casual Part-time Registered Practical Nurse whose role will be to provide health care to the student body, including assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation of student health and health care programs, direct nursing care, and counselling services, in accordance with the guidelines and requirements of the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards of Nursing Practice, and the Health Discipline Act.
Candidates must be flexible and available to work weekdays, weekends, day, evening and overnight shifts as needed to fill any shift gaps. Potential to attend away trips with the school for; camp, field trips, educational trips.
Additional responsibilities:
Provide emergency first aid or health care to ill or injured students, and determine if additional care is required (e.g. doctor, admission to Health Centre, hospital care)
Plan and implement individual care programs for students to address health care concerns, including dispensing medications and treatments in accordance with policies and protocols or as prescribed
Provide counselling to students experiencing mental health problems, and refer forward if necessary
Partner with the school community and parents to identify general health needs
Complete incident reports and maintain student health records
Co-ordinate individual health care plans with the athletic therapist where appropriate
Develop and deliver health promotion programs to support overall health and wellbeing, including programs on nutrition, physical activity, mental health and wellbeing, health relationships, substance abuse, and other topics relevant to the student body or specific segments of the student body
Provide education for parents, caregivers and staff on health promotion, disease prevention, childhood illnesses, and the control of communicable diseases
Develop and deliver training programs for staff in such areas as immediate first aid, correct use of Epi-pens, wellness, etc.
Organize, promote and deliver immunization programs
Maintain first aid kits across the school/college campus
Provide courtesy health advice for school/college employees as appropriate
Plan and implement health and safety initiatives in the school/college
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Diploma in Practical Nursing from an accredited College or University.
Current registration in good standing (General Class) with the College of Nurses of Ontario
CPR and AED certified.
Knowledge & Experience
Minimum of three months of current (within the last 3 years) experience in a primary care setting, emergency or pediatric hospital and/or Public Health school nursing setting. Experience in mental health is an asset.
Current (within the last 3 years) experience in administration of medications, including performing injections.
Knowledge of childhood and adolescent growth and development.
Demonstrated knowledge of applicable legislation.
Demonstrated knowledge and skill in primary assessment.
Demonstrated ability to develop an integrated plan of care.
Ability to integrate reflection, critical thinking, education and relevant practical experience in problem-solving.
Demonstrated commitment to patient education and the ability to promote health and wellness.
Track record of applying knowledge, skills, judgment, and competencies required for safe, independent and inter-disciplinary practice by meeting nursing practice standards as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
Proficiency in working with computers and previous experience working with an electronic medical record system.
Other Skills
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
Strong interpersonal skills with an open communication style.
Demonstrated ability to take 'creative' risk and incorporate critical thinking to make timely decisions in an ever-evolving healthcare landscape that is applied in an independent school setting.
