Overview
Registered Practical Nurses possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, procedural skills and professional attitudes, which are directed to effective patient and family-centered care. RPNs apply these competencies to collect and interpret information, make appropriate nursing clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration with the Registered Nurse, RPNs apply these competencies within the boundaries of their knowledge, skill and judgment, personal expertise, the healthcare setting and the patient's preferences. The role is guided by codes of ethics and a commitment to clinical competence, their care is characterized by up-to-date, resource-efficient clinical practice as well as with effective communication in partnership with patients and families and other health care providers.
Education
- Registered Practical Nurse with current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current BCLS.
- Completion of a certified Health Assessment course (within the last year) required.
- Wound Assessment course preferred.
Qualifications
- 2 to 5 years of recent experience in an Acute Surgical Care environment required.
- 1 year of recent experience in OutPatient surgical clinic(s) preferred.
- 2 years of experience in minor perioperative care and minor surgery is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to implement plan of care including independent and interdependent nursing functions required.
- Demonstrated ability with Lasers, electro-cautery preferred.
- Demonstrated ability in foley catheter insertions and management.
- Demonstrated skill with complex dressings, wound assessment, management of drains, ostomies, trach changes, post surgical care, catheter insertion and ophthalmic care required.
- Work involves lifting, considerable walking, standing, bending, pushing and pulling of equipment.
- Demonstrated ability in understanding the unique needs and teaching requirements of the surgical patient both pre/post operatively.
- Demonstrated knowledge of surgical aseptic techniques and demonstrated experience with surgical instruments, their care and handling preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct advanced pre-/postop assessments and interviews.
- Demonstrated competence and willingness to work at the full scope of practice (as outlined by CNO).
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to participate in unit quality initiatives and measurements.
- Demonstrated understanding of accountability based practice.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a highlyskilled interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated motivation to pursue educational goals.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Good work and attendance record required.
- Must be willing to work in all areas of the Surgery Health Service (skills & abilities considered).
