The Registered Nurse practices in accordance with relevant legislation/standards, meeting the legal and ethical requirements of the profession. The principal responsibilities include: applying knowledge of nursing science, theory, skill and critical decision making in the provision of compassionate, collaborative and competent care in accordance with the UHN Professional Practice Model for Nursing and the mission and vision of nursing at the UHN; ensuring practice is consistent with professional standards and the ethical framework as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the UHN policy and procedure. Nurses in the Day Surgery Unit care for up to 75 patients per day Monday to Friday. These patients are registered, and then admitted, undergo a surgical procedure, and are discharged on the same day. The majority of patients require: surgical treatment from various surgical specialties. The Post Anaesthesia Care Unit, PACU, provides post-operative care to patient who have undergone surgery and are recovering from anaesthesia which includes general anaesthesia, regional anaesthesia, and local anaesthesia with sedation. Patients who have had interventional radiology procedures or mini neuro-surgical procedures in the procedure room are also monitored and recovered here. Surgical procedures done at Toronto Western Hospital, TWH, include neuro surgery, spinal surgery, orthopaedic, hand and plastic surgery, general surgery and minimally invasive surgery, urology procedures, and ophthalmology procedures.

Qualifications

- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario - Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification - Current PACU experience in a tertiary care - teaching institution - Critical Care Certificate required - 3 to 5 years current Medical/Surgical experience - Minimum one (1) year Critical Care experience preferred - Must be able to meet the physical demands of the job - Evidence of collaborative practice - Excellent interpersonal and communication skills - Excellent organizational and time management skills - Strong decision making and problem solving skills - Knowledge and understanding of ethical concerns, frameworks and influences - Evidence of continuing education preferred - BScN preferred - ACLS preferred - Vaccines (COVID-19 and others) are a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption on a medical ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.
