Status: Temporary Full-time for approx. 12 months

Hours: Monday to Friday - Days (Hours subject to change to meet operational requirements)

Overview:

The Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse with additional educational preparation and experience who possesses and demonstrates the competencies to autonomously diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals, and perform specific procedures within his/her legislated scope of practice. The NP role is derived from blending clinical diagnostic and therapeutic knowledge, skills and abilities within a nursing framework that emphasizes holism, health promotion and partnership with individuals and families, as well as communities. Nurse practitioners have the knowledge to assess population health trends and patterns and to design services that promote healthy living. They provide leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of strategies to promote health and prevent illness and injury, and they work with inter-professional teams, other health-care providers and sectors and community members. Nurse practitioners collaborate in the development of policy to influence health services and healthy public policy.

This is what you'll be doing:

The Nurse Practitioner utilizes a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and an advanced level of clinical competence in caring for cancer patients in an outpatient clinic setting or inpatient oncology unit in collaboration with Oncologists and the interdisciplinary team. The NP will be expected to provide a comprehensive health assessment and diagnosis of oncological problems, develop and implement a plan of care, and provide health counseling and emotional support.

Additional Responsibilities may include:

Direct Comprehensive Care: Obtains and documents a comprehensive health history, performs a physical examination on patients requiring assessment, collaborates closely with the Oncologists and other members of the interdisciplinary team and coordinates care involving other healthcare providers. Furthermore, the NP has a role for advancing a patient's plan of care and working with the interdisciplinary team to improve the patient experience.

Leadership: Provides leadership in the development, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of quality management programs. Participates and provides leadership in the strategic planning process for the delivery of patient care. Supports educational initiatives directed at nursing and allied health to promote and provide care that meets best practice standards.

Education: Contributes to the development, implementation and evaluation of patient education programs. Conducts educational teaching sessions with patients and/or families with a focus on impact of illness experience on the patient and family.

Research: Encourages, supports, and facilitates the development of researchable questions in clinical practice and Oncology Clinical Trials.

Consultation: Provides consultation internally and externally for clinical practice issues within the NP's area of specialty and scope of practice.

This is what you'll need to do it:

  • Current registration in the Extended Class (NP-Adult) with the College of Nurses of Ontario required.
  • Completion of a Master Degree in Nursing required.
  • Membership in specialty related organizations e.g. NPAO is preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years nursing experience in a general internal medicine required.
  • Minimum of 2 years recent experience in oncology required.
  • Certification in Oncology CON(C) (or willingness to complete) is required
  • Recent experience as an NP in oncology preferred.
  • Eligibility for cross-appointment to an academic institution preferred.
  • Innovative, creative and professional role model.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize/organize multiple demands.
  • Ability to work autonomously.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Visio an asset.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.
  • Satisfactory employment and attendance record required

Salary: $51.02 to $62.39 per hour
