UNIT PROFILE:

The Women's and Infants' Program delivers approx. 3200 babies /year. The Mother Baby Unit is a 21 bed unit where a Mother and her baby will continue their journey from Birthing. It is a Family Centered Unit where parents are encouraged to be involved with their babies care and room in at all times with the model of Zero Separation. We provide newborn care, feeding support and health teaching during their post partum time. On the unit we also care for Antenatal patients who have health risks or develop complications with their pregnancy and also post-op gynecology patients. A multi-disciplinary team work with our patients and their families to ease the transition from hospital to home.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Registered Nurse (RN) is a regulated health care professional who adheres to and models the Standards and Guidelines of the College of Nurses of Ontario; the SJHH mission, vision and values, policies and procedures; and applicable specialty standards. The RN provides patient/client-centered and evidence informed care to promote health and assess the need for the provision of care and the treatment of health conditions by supportive, preventative, therapeutic, palliative and rehabilitation means in order to attain or maintain optimal patient/client function. The RN collaborates with the inter-professional team and assumes a leadership role in the delivering a full range of care and treatment to patient/clients including those with complex needs, high acuity and less predictable outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • BScN from an accredited university required
  • Current BCLS/CPR certification required
  • RNAO, CNA or other professional association membership preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and judgement required to provide a full range of care and treatment in the clinical area of practice to patients/clients including those with complex needs, high acuity and less predictable outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (written and verbal) effectively with patients/clients and families
  • Demonstrated ability to practice collaboratively and communicate clearly with members of the interdisciplinary team to provide care for a full range of patients/clients
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and organize work in response to patient/client and unit needs
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning, professional development and continuous quality improvement
  • Demonstrated basic skill level with computers, MS Word, incident reporting systems, internet searches, data entry and patient information systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill related to crisis intervention and conflict resolution
  • Demonstrated strong leadership, problem solving, critical thinking, team building and interpersonal skills

Mother Bay Unit -specific Qualifications:
  • Recent clinical experience (within the last 2 years) in Maternal-Newborn nursing
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Provider certification or commitment to successfully complete within 3 months of employment
  • Willingness and ability to cross-train within the Women's and Infants' program citing a secondary area of interest
  • Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:

a) Perinatal Nursing Certificate from a recognized College or C.N.A. certification

b) Breastfeeding Certificate from a recognized College program

c) International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) designation

d) Neonatal Resuscitation Provider Program
  • Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal communication, teaching, problem-solving and delegation skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and learning related to the nursing care of childbearing women, newborns, children and their families
  • Good attendance and work record is essential
  • A resume regarding further education, special courses and experience should accompany the application

HOURS OF WORK:

Rotating shifts and extended hours - days, nights, weekends, holidays
