Position Summary:

Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the Obstetrics, Charge Nurse (CN) provides guidance, feedback and support, will act as a coach and mentor for team members. The Charge Nurse is responsible for the co-ordination of the daily operations of the Obstetrics clinical units as well as accountable to support the implementation of change initiatives that support achievement of department goals. In collaboration with the inter-professional team, the CN co-ordinates team efforts to enhance team work and positive patient experience and quality and safety outcomes. The CN assists and or facilitates these team members to coordinate and integrate services to ensure efficient patient flow and delivery of care, interventions or discharge transitions. The Charge Nurse is accountable to the Clinical Manager and his her/decisions and actions.

This posting is limited to RN staff from Obstetrics.

Responsibilities and Activities
  • Assign duties to team members that are consistent with the member's knowledge, skill, and scope of practice
  • Assess departmental human resource needs during the shift and readjusts assignments as needed
  • Liaise with OB Triage Registered Nurse to facilitate flow through the department, including but not limited to implementing staff assignments for caesarean sections and birthing as required
  • Act as a resource, mentor, and role model for team members communicating appropriate knowledge, skills and judgment.
  • Conducting continuous quality improvement audits i.e. BORN, Workload, Documentation Audits and follow up appropriately with staff.
  • Adapt to changing workloads, collaborating with colleagues hospital-wide regarding adjusting priorities
  • Contribute to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff, program volunteers and visitors
  • Participate in departmental committees as necessary
  • Ensures quality and safety audits are completed daily or as required e.g. program safety audits, medication audits discrepancies
  • Assists with monitoring and evaluating clinical indicators, professional practice quality checks, and any Accreditation Canada ROP's related to their clinical unit
  • Facilitates staff to attend educational opportunities in hospital
  • Initiates review of incident reports in electronic incident management system (RL solutions) for level 1-3 incidents ; investigation and root cause analysis
  • Supports the team to ensure active coordination of patient flow throughout the program
  • Collaborates with the hospital support services to ensure resources meet the program needs
  • Works in compliance of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations, reporting hazards, deficiencies and contraventions of the Act in a timely manner. This includes immediate mitigation of unsafe acts or conditions. This position is not a supervisor for the purpose of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its corresponding obligations and liabilities
  • Performs cross-functional and/or other duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned or requested.
  • Supports unit orientation for new staff and or student placements throughout the program
  • Demonstrates patient - focused care that includes exceptional clinical assessment skills


Qualifications Required:
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or currently enrolled in such a program
  • Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • Minimum 3 (three) years of current nursing experience in all of the following: Birthing, Post Partum and Special Care Nursery at CMH is required
  • Current BCLS required
  • Completion of Certified Breastfeeding course is required
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation program completion is required
  • Current Fetal Health Surveillance Certificate is required
  • Completion of a Perinatal Nursing or Maternal Newborn Nursing certificate preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to function independently in all Obstetrical emergency situations is required
  • Experience with scrub and circulate roles for C-sections required
  • CMH certified to initiate intravenous lines in infants, and adults and administer intravenous medications required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to life-long learning and excellence in professional practice is required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control policies is required
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the clinical needs of the Women's and Children's patient population and any legislative parameters that governs treatment plans or interventions is required
  • Excellent skills associated with physical assessment, critical thinking, crisis management and problem solving
  • Demonstrated commitment to CMH values of respect, caring, collaboration, accountability and innovation in communication, actions and expectations for team members is required
  • Sound judgement related to professional nursing practice
  • Exceptional understanding and demonstrated experience in coaching and mentoring of staff
  • Demonstrated leadership skills: Conflict resolution, Staff engagement, Problem solving is required
  • Demonstrated experience leading a team through Change Management processes is required
  • Demonstrated ability to Self-direct (takes initiative)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in Women's & Children's process improvement strategies including, data collection, analysis and sharing data at unit huddles or other unit specific communication venues
  • Excellent communication skills; including communication with staff, physicians, patients and families and community partners
  • Executes duties in a manner that demonstrates the employee's commitment to developing a culture of patient and staff safety through accountability, reliability, trust and teamwork
  • Knowledge of CMH corporate wildly important goals (WIG's), organizational strategies and priorities and has the ability to mentor and support staff in translation to unit performance indicators, established clinical benchmarks and targeted outcomes
  • Supports CMH philosophy of inter-professional collaborative practice and has a working knowledge of inter professional team member's scope of practice
  • Demonstrated computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Office) and a working knowledge of the electronic documentation systems is required
  • Demonstrated ability to enter, analyze, and document follow-up in the incident management system
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis is required
