PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Reporting to the Administrator, the incumbent will:

  • manage the nursing department at Grandview Lodge, ensuring consistency with professional standards of practice, legislation, and continuous quality improvement in meeting the nursing and personal care requirements of the Residents; and ensure the highest possible occupancy levels to maximize funding from Provincial Government Ministry; facilitate admissions to Grandview Lodge in conjunction with Community Care Access Centre (CCAC);
  • directly supervise the Assistant Director of Nursing and associated functions

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

 

  • University degree (BScN) Must be currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Plus

  • Minimum of five years experience working as a registered nurse.  Experience in long term care is an asset. Minimum of at least three years experience working as a registered nurse in a managerial or supervisory capacity in a health care setting (experience may include relative post graduate training)

Or equivalent to that combination.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Sound knowledge of long-term care legislation and regulations and municipal government with understanding of the relationships that exist between the various levels of government that provide direction, advice, funding support, and other services to the municipality and to the long-term care facility
  • Sound understanding of Accreditation processes and Required Organizational Practices
  • to participate in quality management activities and ensure activities carried out are in alignment with the home’s strategic plan and with a focus to continuously improve clinical care practices and resident care
  • Sound knowledge of long-term care operations and relevant current management, technical and operating practices
  • Sound technical knowledge relative to accountabilities
  • Sound knowledge of all applicable regulations, standards and Acts and ability to implement Ministry directives effectively as required;
  • Demonstrated leadership skills to provide direction and motivation to staff and project teams, to develop staff skills, knowledge and abilities, to create a constructive, results-oriented work environment where positive performance is rewarded and inappropriate / inadequate performance is constructively managed
  • Communication skills (listening, writing, verbal) to provide clear direction, which results in Staff directing their efforts toward achievement of aligned goals, to address diverse subject areas, encompassing social, economic, physical and environmental issues
  • Report and presentation writing skills to provide information to management and Council as required and to enable grant submissions or acceptances of funding from senior levels of government.
  • Good understanding of risk / emergency management techniques / procedures relative to long term care facilities
  • Solid understanding of types of strategic and planning processes required to develop appropriate nursing department short- and long-term goals and objectives.
  • Interpersonal skills to increase staff morale, team building, team spirit and community pride, to establish and maintain relations with peers, direct reports, other County staff, provincial and federal agencies, and other organizations and to manage and resolve conflict and emergency situations through the use of tact, diplomacy and conflict resolution skills
  • Analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills to enable the assessment of multiple issues, the development of options and implementation of decisions recognizing impacts and mitigating repercussions
  • Financial management skills to develop budgets (operating and capital), monitor approved financial parameters, take action as appropriate to maintain sound financial position, understand and deal with financial reports and requirements
  • Time management / organization skills to deal with multiple priorities / issues
  • Valid Ontario Drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Computer Expertise:

     

    Level 3 - The incumbent must possess introductory and intermediate level computer skills scored at 65% or higher for Outlook and at least one of Word / Excel / PowerPoint to ensure them

    • proven ability to apply essential functions of desktop software to create simple spreadsheets, documents, send and receive emails, use Internet for research, file management and/or require introductory to intermediate knowledge of department or division-specific software to accomplish job tasks
    ACCOUNTABILITIES / TASKS

    The incumbent is expected to:

    • follow the GVL philosophy of delivering care to Residents by utilizing Montessori and GPA principles. communicate with Residents, visitors and other personnel in a courteous manner. ensure Resident's Bill of Rights are respected Follow the guidelines set out by relevant provincial legislation, regulations and directives

    Include but are not limited to:

    • Participate as a member of Grandview’s management team, under the direction of the Administrator, and contribute to the development of goals and objectives for Grandview; chair or be an active participant in meetings designed to ensure actions are identified and taken contributing to continuous quality improvement at Grandview Lodge. While directly overseeing the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON), and also working collaboratively, provide a supportive environment for the ongoing learning and development of the practice of nursing at Grandview Lodge. Foster an environment of growth, empowering team members to approach care using an evidenced based care model that ensures best practices are utilized Direct oversight of the Nursing Quality Assurance Nurse Coordinator, MDS/RAI Coordinator, Scheduler, Infection Prevention & Control Coordinator, Unit Clerk and Administrative Assistant positions  Develop nursing department goals and objectives in concert with approved Corporate and Division (Grandview Lodge) Strategic Goals, and direct nursing operations to achieve those goals Ensure report submissions are completed as required to the MOH and LHIN eg. QIP, Staffing Reports, to ensure compliance with regulations and directives and to secure appropriate levels of funding; Prepare and present information / briefing reports related to nursing issues and recommends specific actions required, to update the Administrator, the Grandview Management Team and others Ensure compliance with applicable legislation and regulations relevant to the nursing function; (specifically, Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care standards); ensure direct reports and contractors understand and conduct all work within the applicable Acts, regulations, and County policies.  Oversee ADON in ensuring that his/her direct reports also comply with applicable legislation, regulations and policies.
    • Manage resource planning for the nursing department helping to identify desirable role/skill mix requirements to ensure ongoing work and resident care quality. Manages various contracts related to the nursing department.  (Eg. Lab, Pharmacy) Consults with professional staff and agencies to deliver the appropriate services to meet the nursing department’s needs. Manages the High Intensity Needs Program Supports/facilitates the medication administration program, monitoring drugs and narcotics to ensure their control and safekeeping.  Meets with residents, and/or families to resolve concerns related to the nursing department
    • Apply sound human resource management practices (recruitment, development and performance management) in accordance with approved policies and collective agreements to ensure an effective team and a work place free of intimidation and harassment;
    • Foster an environment of positive staff engagement Assists staff in resident care in times of emergency to instruct staff on improving care methods or when assistance is required by staff Ensure all staffing related issues, including recruitment, grievances and labour relations issues, are aligned to HR and Corporate standards and practices. Provide leadership and direction to ensure that nursing staff work safely and in concert with current defined goals and objectives; approve Nursing Staff schedules prior to posting to ensure appropriate levels of trained nursing care are available at all times. Maintain asset management information with respect to nursing equipment and replacement schedules in collaboration with the Supervisor, Facilities. Develop the nursing department operating and capital budget for review by the Administrator; manage approved budget; recommend or take corrective action(s) if required Supports/facilitates the coordination of the ordering, inventory management, distribution, and appropriate and safe use of supplies and equipment for the nursing department. Authorize, and administer the acquisition of goods and services for the operating unit and direct reports in accordance with the procurement policy and procedures Responsible for the development, implementation, monitoring and maintenance of appropriate policies and procedures including monitoring and reporting systems that support the safe and efficient delivery of nursing services and programs at Grandview; takes all reasonable proactive actions to ensure the safety and well being of residents.
    • Develop, implement and lead various clinical practice initiatives and committees including the Professional Advisory Committee and Ethics Committee, ensuring the home follows an approved ethical framework
    • Consult with the Medical Director on quarterly basis and as needed to manage matters relating to medical care in Grandview Lodge
    • Investigate and respond, as necessary, to major incidents or allegations, assuming control as necessary Respond to inquiries from the public and other external sources regarding Long Term Care services provided by Grandview Lodge. Collaborate with interdisciplinary colleagues to foster cooperation and a team approach across all departments within the home Assume the responsibilities of the WSIB coordinator when required. Assume the responsibilities of the Administrator when delegated or required. Assume responsibility for the maintenance and management of the Pandemic Manual Provide / practice effective public relations to sustain a positive image for Grandview Lodge and the Corporation of Haldimand County Represent the Grandview Lodge at relevant meetings Establish and maintain relationships with peers and counterparts in other organizations. Undertakes activities as per all lawful instruction and direction received from the Administrator or General Manager of the Department
