TITLE: Charge Nurse (RPN or RN). REPORTS TO: Health and Wellness Manager POSITION SUMMARY:Practices as a registered nursing professional within the Nursing Team and in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario's practice standards. Fully engages in the nursing process and promotes the health and well-being of SRR residents by contributing to the assessment of resident health needs and the development of Care Plans. Practices is a manner that supports RHA compliance.MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides supportive, person-centered care and assistance that allows residents to lead active and fulfilled lives in all aspects; physically, socially, spiritually, mentally and emotionally.
  • Participates with other members of the Care Team in care plan development, including participating in care plan conferences.
  • Promotes a comfortable and safe environment for all residents including those experiencing responsive behaviours, risk for injury and/or residents requiring end-of-life care, including responding to call bells.
  • Understands she/he oversees the building whenever there is no manager on site.
  • Observes, assesses, reports, records, evaluates and communicates pertinent information regarding residents' needs or health changes, including maintaining accurate and complete records of nursing observations and care in compliance with the legislative requirements and the policies of the Residence.
  • Must promote and maintain RHA compliance with all parts of the Act, but specifically Part IV-Resident's Rights, Care and Safety.
  • Able to establish communication with appropriate sources in response to emergency situations.
  • Practices universal precautions and adheres to WHMIS protocols.
  • Uses good body mechanics, appropriate mechanical aids and assistance from co-workers to prevent strain, injury or fatigue to self or resident.
  • Reports and documents all residents' and employees' incidents/accidents/ complaints.
  • Receives direction and assignment from the H&W Manager and/or Quality Care Coordinator.
  • Adheres closely to Scarborough Retirement Residence Vision and Mission, as well as Employee policies and procedures, which includes protecting the rights of the resident and family in matters such as confidentiality, privacy, beliefs and values.
  • Directs, assigns and evaluates the work of the PSWs.
  • Uses leadership skills to identify problems and assist in problem solving.
  • Administers medications and treatments in compliance with the policies of the Residence and Standards of Practice of the College of Nurses.
  • Demonstrates accountability by documenting and reporting all errors and omissions.
  • Gives/receives reports to ensure ongoing communication and passes on the keys to replacement Charge Nurse. Explicitly, incoming Charge Nurses must arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of their shift to receive such reports and conduct narcotic count.
  • Ensures supplies and equipment, such as medications, dressing supplies, and resident supplies are properly and efficiently ordered and utilized by completing audits and inventories as required.
  • Checks Fridge temperatures on Day and Evening shifts. Will report to H&W manager or designate if fridge temp is above or below TPH guidelines
  • Liaises with other health care personnel, agencies and families as required.
  • Maintains good relationships with Medical/Support/Residence staff, residents, families and the general public.
  • Assumes responsibility/accountability for professional growth and development, through participation in staff development programs, committees, seminars and workshops both in the Residence and externally, as well as meeting the CNO's yearly requirement for Quality Assurance.
  • Assists in the orientation of the resident, family and Nursing Staff.
  • Attends all Nursing team monthly meetings to discuss Department objectives, changes and concerns, and enhance ongoing communication. Attendance can be via conference call.
  • Maintains environmental safety in building and reports any hazards, which require attention to appropriate Department Manager.
  • Participates in admission, discharge, and transfer of resident.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Considerable standing and walking
  • Exposure to resident elements through regular resident contact.
  • Regular stress in dealing with resident care needs and time pressures.
  • Considerable concentration required during preparation and administration of medications.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • Current Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of nursing and health care practices and techniques including courses or experience in geriatrics.
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certificates.
  • WHMIS training.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Completion of all mandatory and best practices in-services.
  • Mask fit testing.
