Unit Profile

The Emergency Department is a 54-bed unit that serves the communities of Halton, Halton Hills and the surrounding areas. Last year, we had approximately 78,000 visits although the number is estimated to climb to 81,000 this year.

Our ED serves patients of all ages and treats patients of every medical and mental health illness.

Our ED has uniquely built in a 5-bed mental health unit and a dedicated DI cluster to better service our patients.

Our 24-hour staff are fortunate to be comprised of nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and many other members of a very robust multidisciplinary team. Dedicated internal medicine in the ED working with two nurse practitioners helps to ensure comprehensive assessments of patients for timely referrals and/or admission.

As a new graduate nurse in our Emergency Department your main job will be the care of post-assessment patients facilitating diagnostics, continued monitoring and timely discharge home or to the inpatient unit within our Post-Assessment Treatment Zone. Your initial onboarding will include in-classroom emergency-department specific curricula, simulations and monthly learner-lead sessions with our Professional Practice Clinician.

What you can expect
  • Nurses successfully hired into the NGG program with Halton Healthcare can expect to be provided with a 20 week transition into practice period in a clinical setting
  • Your 20 week transition into practice period will be in a supernumerary position (above staffing complement) and will be designed to build on your prior education and experience in a clinical setting
