Hospice Peterborough is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to enhance the comfort, dignity and quality of life of individuals and families living with or affected by life-threatening illness or grief. Hospice Peterborough is seeking a Manager for its 10 bed Hospice Residence.  

The Manager of Hospice Residence provides nursing leadership to ensure quality client-centered care is provided to Hospice Peterborough residents and families following best practices as set out by the College of Nurses and the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association.

 

Hospice Peterborough is a collaborative working environment and this position will be part of the leadership team tasked with looking after the day-to-day operations of the Hospice residence. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Clinical, Client and Family Care

  • Create and support a culture of shared leadership and mentoring that promotes client-centered approaches to decision-making and provision of evidenced based and quality hospice palliative care services.
  • In collaboration with appropriate staff and partners and using predetermined validated tools and criteria, decide who will be offered admission.
  • Maintain the admissions wait list and referral information and if necessary assist in discharge planning for clients whose health improves after admission to Hospice.
  • Implement and monitor and act on medication reconciliation, administration and control and safekeeping of medications (including narcotics) and medication errors.
  • Implement and monitor best practice in clinical care such as palliative pain and symptom management, falls prevention, wound management.
  • Manage any complaints that cannot be resolved by frontline staff.
  • Be available for clinical consultation.
  • Take a leadership role in clinical communication, including the facilitation of bedside rounds.
  • Chair the Clinical Practice Committee and member of the Quality Committee of the Board of Governors

 

Human Resources and Volunteers

 

  • Take a leadership role in staff recruitment, retention and succession planning strategy and practice. Hire, orient and supervise staff, including progressive, corrective and disciplinary action if necessary; implement regular performance appraisals. Review job descriptions and applicable HR policies and procedures. Manage situational conflict as necessary. In conjunction with the staff person most responsible for volunteer coordination, ensure volunteer roles are clearly defined and that volunteers are receiving appropriate supervision. Promote conditions, attitudes and activities that enhance the quality of work life. Determine the need for and/or facilitate education and situational debriefing to support the regulated health professionals, staff and volunteers providing care, including the development and implementation of an annual education plan for the Hospice residence and PCCT.

 

Quality Improvement/Evaluation/Accountability and Risk Management

 

  • Lead the development and implementation of quality improvement and evaluation activities - ensuring client and family input. Ensure quality improvement and evaluation activities are linked to the organization-wide Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) and sector-wide reporting. Ensure operations are in compliance with the Regulated Health Professions Act, Hospice Palliative Care Ontario (HPCO) accreditation standards and evidence-based practices - encompassing but not limited to medication safety, falls prevention and staff and client safety. Analyze trends found in the evaluation of all data to improve programs. Take a leadership role in the development and monitoring of risk management. Ensure policies, procedures and protocols for the collection, access, transfer and storage of client health information are followed; maintain the confidentiality and privacy of health information for all clients.

Program Development and Maintenance of Programs

 

  • Lead annual and strategic visioning, goal-setting and planning. Oversee, develop and maintain resident care program and policies, procedures, and protocols; provide nursing input into the development of other policies, procedures and protocols. Maintain and utilize an awareness of public policy and evidence-based practice related to hospice palliative care. Further the vision of Hospice Peterborough as a hub of excellence through participation in hospice palliative care sector initiatives and research. Complete required program/department reports.

 

Health & Safety

 

  • Implement and maintain provincial infection control standards including laundry and housekeeping. Lead infection and prevention control standards such as additional precautions and outbreak management Regularly implement fire drills and mock emergency response exercises. In partnership with the HR administrator, oversee and maintain health and safety policies and procedures. In partnership with the HR administrator, demonstrate the importance of health and safety in the workplace through daily monitoring of the environment and with respect to workplace injuries and return to work plans as set out by Occupational Health and Safety legislation. Participates in health and safety training, including WHIMIS, and applies this knowledge in the workplace.

Financial Management

 

  • Ensure staffing decisions match funding models and associated budgets including the approval of overtime, sick time coverage and vacation. Create the Residence budget in partnership with the manager of Finance and Administration and Executive Director. Oversee budget for, and purchasing of supplies and equipment; and suggest or negotiate changes as necessary. Participate in the tendering, selection and on-going relationships with contracted services in the Hospice residence (e.g. pharmacy, oxygen, equipment). With Manager of Finance and Administration, monthly monitor the budget to ensure cost effective management of care delivered.

 

 

 

 

Organizational Responsibilities:

 

  • Be an active member of Hospice Peterborough`s collaborative management team, participate in management meetings. Be part of a team based culture where everyone steps up to support clients, families and the entire operation of the Residence and Community Programs. Fulfill after hours on-call responsibilities for additional compensation (with other staff members). Represent Hospice Peterborough in external community activities, education opportunities and committees. Participate in internal Hospice activities and committees. Complete administrative reports.

 

 

  • Participate with the executive director in an annual performance appraisal. Fulfill all responsibilities in accordance with the by-laws, policies and procedures and standards of Hospice Peterborough. Accept other duties as required.

Qualifications:

 

 

 

  • Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses Ontario with the requisite practice insurance Minimum Bachelor’s degree in nursing with demonstrated commitment to continuous learning Three to five years management experience in a relevant health care setting Proven success leading, mentoring and empowering health care teams Demonstrated success managing staff resources: hiring, orienting, supervising and evaluating Knowledge and applied experience with managing a resident care program Completed palliative education. For example, CNA certification in Hospice Palliative Care, CAPCE, Fundamentals of Palliative Care or equivalent educational courses in another jurisdiction. Ability to integrate evaluation and quality improvement into practice Three-to-five years experience working in a hospice palliative care setting Experience working with clients and families who face life threatening illness and death Experience developing policies and procedures that integrate evidence based practices Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, databases and effective internet research) Knowledge of community health and social service resources Current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check, Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Abuse Registry Check. Knowledge of the palliative care sector and partners within Peterborough City and County and Central East LHIN; including but not limited to MOHLTC priorities, OPCN, funding programs and current healthcare trends.
