The Nurse Practitioner of Pain Medicine will function within the scope outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario. They will demonstrate a high level of autonomy in clinical decision making, assessments and treatments related to the acute and complex pain problems. This role will require the NP to function within the interprofessional Acute Pain (inpatient) and Transitional Pain Services (outpatient) (APS/TPS). The NP will work closely with the APS, TPS and Anesthesia care team to provide targeted, patient specific treatments aimed at reducing the incidence of severity of acute pain and incidence of persistent post-surgical pain and related disability. Principle responsibilities include: direct patient care, demonstration and utilization of a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base related to pain assessment and management at the level of competence expected within the College of Nurses extended class registration. The NP will help to identify holistic care needs and collaborate with care providers external to the department of Anesthesia to ensure pain is appropriately managed, including the identification of an outpatient follow up plan in the community or referral to a UHN Pain Program. Additionally, the NP will help to identify systems and prevent inappropriate opioid medication use and help transition to opioid agonist (buprenorphine/naloxone) treatment in collaboration with the pain team. The NP will also contribute to nursing education, policy and procedure development, research activities, and act as a resource and serve as a consultant to individuals and groups within the professional community. Previous work in the pain/addiction medicine space would be an asset to this role but is not an expectation. These contributions will reflect the expected role of an Advanced Practice Nurse. QUALIFICATIONS: - Completion of Master's Degree Program in Nursing (or one semester from completion) - Registered Nurse (EC) certification with the College of Nurses complete or pending and in good standing - Nurse Practitioner (NP) Adult or Primary Certification or pending completionDemonstrated expertise as a Nurse Practitioner preferred - Completion of CNO approved controlled substances education - Nursing experience in acute care setting - Nursing experience in pain and treatment of opioid use disorder - Experience in nursing research and methodology - Eligible for cross appointment to an academic institution - Membership with the Registered Nurse or Nurse Practitioner Association of Ontario and others relevant to the role - Effective written, verbal, interpersonal and customer service skills - Excellent organization and time management skills - Excellent decision making, problem recognition and problem solving skills - Effective negotiation and conflict resolution skills - Program planning and evaluation skills - Commitment to collaborative academic practice - Ability to work in a self-directed manner and interprofessional teams in a fast paced, demanding environment - Ability to effectively manage stressful situations - Ability to use information technology - Vaccines (COVID-19 and others) are a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption on a medical ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.
