Supervisor, Nursing Best Practice (Pediatrics) – Toronto Central

This position will provide clinical support and in-home assessments to monitor quality practice standards, client care needs and outcomes, client and staff satisfaction as well as resource utilization.

Working within a client and family-centred philosophy the Supervisor, Nursing Best Practice will work collaboratively with the Client Services and Best Practices Teams to provide clinical leadership, expertise and consultation to VHA’s nursing staff to champion the advancement of professional practice, evidence-based best practices, education, and an integrated, inter-professional clinical practice environment. The Supervisor, Nursing Best Practice is further responsible to ensure that skills, competencies and advanced practices for their team are in accordance with the respective regulatory bodies, VHA policies and procedures, guidelines and directives, and that all activities conducted for VHA are congruent with the organization’s standards of safety and quality, and employment standards including human rights legislation.

The Supervisor, Nursing Best Practice is also accountable to ensure that care plans reflect evidence based practice and adopt a population health approach specific to the developmental needs of clients. The Supervisor, Nursing Best Practice assists in the development of specialized procedures related to paediatric nursing practice, acts as a role model and change agent, represents VHA in the paediatric community with partnerships at The Hospital for Sick Children Connected Care and Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab and Toronto Central Home and Community Care. 

Key Areas of Accountability:

  • Provides clinical leadership, advice, consultation, mentorship and supervision to population based team of nurses
  • Provides practice and performance support to paediatric nurses
  • Collaborates with leadership teams and clinical practitioners to promote client safety and risk reduction
  • Acts as a key change agent in supporting organizational change 
  • Functions as a member of the regional leadership team and contributes to integrated care opportunities across functions and populations as needed
  • Supports learning and development of paediatric nurses through onsite training, simulation competency and classroom facilitation

Key Skills, experience and Behaviours Required For this Position:

  • Undergraduate degree in Nursing combined with a thorough understanding of Standards of Practice as established by the CNO
  • Graduate Degree in Nursing, Education or Health Administration is an asset
  • Minimum of 5 years progressive experience in Paediatric nursing of which 2 years include experience in a supervisory or advanced practice role (community nursing experience will be an asset)
  • Ongoing membership with professional associations an asset including Certification in Community Health Nursing or Paediatric Nursing
  • Excellent therapeutic communication and dispute resolution skills  
  • Experience with recruiting, hiring and onboarding new nurses and supporting their development
  • Proven commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity
  • Good understanding of the health care services and delivery processes in the community/home care sector
  • Strong clinical practitioner with an ability to use knowledge-transfer techniques to put evidence-based knowledge into practice
  • Demonstrated knowledge and/or skills in the use of information technology for electronic clinical documentation and clinical decision support
  • Awareness and understanding of all relevant legislation related to practice standards, standards of safety and quality, and employment standards including human rights legislation
  • Strong organizational and self-management skills with demonstrated ability to achieve personal, professional, and organizational performance targets
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and ability to coach and motivate teams
  • Superior interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, and skilled in customer service
  • Clear, logical, system thinker and innovative problem solver with demonstrated advanced judgment and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, and to lead or contribute as a member of an inter-professional team
  • Demonstrated commitment to modeling lifelong learning and continuous professional growth
  • Use of proper body mechanics and successful completion of the Physical Readiness Test to ensure safe work practices are followed, including mobility, transfers, bending, lifting, push and pulling
  • Valid driver’s license and use of a car on the job required
  • Availability for after hours, on-call work
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required, including days, weekends, evenings, and holidays
  • Supervisory On-Call on a rotational basis and as required.
