Critical Care Registered Nurse, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Permanent Full-Time (1.0)

UNIT SUMMARY

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 10-bed state-of-the-art critical care unit designed to meet the needs of our patients and families. Our Department provides comprehensive services for a wide variety of critically ill medical and surgical patients with acute, life-threatening disease and injury.

The PICU provides intensive care for a wide range of complex, rapidly changing medical, surgical and traumatic disorders occurring in pediatric patients aged 18 and under. Areas of subspecialty care includes congenital heart disease, cardiovascular surgery, respiratory failure, neurosurgery. immunodeficiencies, hematologic and oncologic emergencies, sepsis, and multi-organ system dysfunction. Available advanced treatment modalities include cardiovascular surgery (neonatal, pediatric, and cardiac ECMO), high frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy, non-invasive ventilation, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. 

POSITION SUMMARY

CHEO provides a 20 week orientation and support period to ensure a smooth transition in to practice on the unit.

In keeping with the mission statement of the hospital and the patient service unit, the nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care for individual patients/families.

• Effectively uses the nursing process  
• Practices according to the standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario, the Hospital, and the patient service unit
• Provides appropriate learning experiences for the patient and family to promote or maintain wellness, and to achieve an optimal quality of life
• Is accountable for maintaining competence while developing the quality of his/ her professional nursing practice

QUALIFICATIONS

• Vulnerable Sector Check (Essential)
• Current Certification of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (Essential)
• Current CPR Certification (Essential)
• Paediatric acute care experience (minimum 2 years) OR critical care experience (minimum 2 years)    (Essential)    
• Critical Care experience with the ability to care for Hemodynamically unstable and ventilated patients     (Preferred)
• Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills (Essential)
• Demonstrated culturally sensitive approach to nursing care (Essential)
• Demonstrated strong family centered care skills  (Essential)
• Bilingual (English/ French) (Preferred)
• Baccalaureate Degree of Nursing (Preferred)
• Critical Care courses and Certification or other appropriate combination of education and experience    (Preferred) 
• Current PALS certification OR successful completion of PALS certification within 12 months of hire    (Essential)

A potential relocation incentive may apply.

• CHEO is proud to be participating in the Community Commitment Program for Nurses (CCPN). The CCPN provides $25,000 in grant funding to eligible nurses in exchange for a two-year commitment to an eligible employer.

To be eligible for the CCPN, a nurse must:

• Not have been employed as a nurse in Ontario in the six months prior to being hired;
• Hold a Certificate of Registration in good standing from the College of Nurses of Ontario;
• Begin employment no later than March 31, 2024;
• Commit to two-years of employment at a full-time work schedule offered by the employer; and
• Not simultaneously receive funds from the Ministry of Health for the Tuition Support Program for Nurses.

RÉSUMÉ DE L’UNITÉ

L’Unité pédiatrique des soins intensifs (UPSI) est une unité de soins intensifs de 10 lits conçue pour répondre aux besoins de nos patients et de nos familles. Notre service offre des services médicaux et chirurgicaux complets à une grande variété de patients gravement malades présentant des maladies et des blessures graves et potentiellement mortelles.

L’UPSI offre des soins intensifs pour une vaste gamme de troubles médicaux, chirurgicaux, traumatiques complexes évoluant rapidement qui surviennent chez les patients pédiatriques âgés de 18 ans et moins. Les domaines de soins de sous-spécialité comprennent les maladies cardiaques congénitales, la chirurgie cardiovasculaire, l’insuffisance respiratoire, la neurochirurgie, les immunodéficiences, les urgences hématologiques et oncologiques, la septicémie et le dysfonctionnement systémique de plusieurs organes. Les modalités de traitement avancées disponibles comprennent la chirurgie cardiovasculaire (ECMO néonatal, pédiatrique et cardiaque), la ventilation à haute fréquence, le traitement au moyen de l’oxyde nitrique, la ventilation non invasive et l’oxygénothérapie hyperbarique.

CHEO offre une période d’orientation et de soutien de 20 semaines pour assurer une transition harmonieuse vers la pratique au sein de l’unité.

Conformément à l’énoncé de mission de l’Hôpital et de l’Unité des services aux patients, l’infirmière ou l’infirmier a la responsabilité d’apprécier, de planifier, de mettre en œuvre et d’évaluer les soins à fournir à chaque patient et à sa famille.

• Suivre efficacement le processus de soins infirmiers. 
• Exercer sa profession conformément aux normes fixées par l’Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers de l’Ontario, par l’Hôpital et par l’Unité des services aux patients.
• Faire part de ses connaissances aux patients et à leurs familles afin de promouvoir et de maintenir leur bien être et de les aider à atteindre une qualité de vie optimale.
• Assumer le maintien de ses compétences ainsi que le perfectionnement de sa pratique professionnelle des soins infirmiers. 

QUALITÉS REQUISES

• Vérification des antécédents en vue d’un travail auprès de personnes vulnérables (Essentiel)
• Adhésion à jour auprès de l’Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers de l’Ontario (Essentiel)
• Certificat valide de RCR (Essentiel)
• Expérience en soins aigus pédiatriques (au moins deux ans) OU expérience en soins intensifs (au moins deux ans) (Essentiel)
• Expérience des soins intensifs et capacité de s’occuper de patients hémodynamiquement instables et ventilés  (Préférable)
• Bon entregent et compétences manifestes de la communication  (Essentiel)
• Pratique des soins infirmiers manifestement sensible à la culture des patients et de leurs famille (Essentiel)
• Compétences manifestes des soins axés sur la famille  (Essentiel)
• Bilinguisme (français et anglais) (Préférable)
• Baccalauréat en sciences infirmières (Préférable)
• Cours et certificats en soins intensifs ou toute autre combinaison d’études et d’expérience        (Préférable)
• Certificat de SARP à jour ou obtention du certificat de SARP dans les 12 mois suivants l’embauche (Essentiel)
