The Opportunity:

This position is for a temporary assignment to the Laboratory department for approximately one (1) Year. Upon conclusion, the position will be re-assigned to another department/unit permanently

This unique opportunity for RPNs will include a variety of clinical tasks working alongside the Lab Technologists and Assistants. Some of the core tasks include performing venipuncture techniques and collecting/preparing patient samples for lab analysis - applicable training to be provided. The RPN will have an important role in communicating with the patient, doctors, lab and nursing staff. Additionally, the RPN will operate as a team member in the promotion, assessment, provision and delivery of quality care through supportive, preventative, therapeutic, palliative and rehabilitative means in order to attain or maintain optimal function.

Qualifications:

· Current Registration in good standing as a Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario

· Current BCLS Certification

· Minimum of one-year acute care nursing experience

· Must strive to continuously provide a safe and supportive environment for patients, staff, physicians, and volunteers

· Must adhere to the duties of workers, as stipulated in the Occupational Health and Safety Act

· Must have an ability to effectively communicate (written and verbal) in the English language in order to provide excellent communication with team members, patients and families. Ability to communicate in additional language(s) is considered an asset.

· Must have basic computer skills

· Must be dedicated to professional growth & development

· Must be able to perform all bona fide and essential duties of the position, which may include physical demands such as moving/transferring patients, pushing, pulling, bending, etc.

· Must have demonstrated excellent attendance/performance record

· Excellent organization and prioritization skills

· Ability to work independently and effectively communicate with other members of the health

care team

· Phlebotomy and/or experience in a lab setting is preferred

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Collects blood samples

· Sample preparation for analysis e.g. separation, numbering, referral samples

· Set-up of supplies, equipment, etc.

· Reagent preparation

· Perform point of care testing

· Recording quality control results for interpretation and approval by qualified staff as listed above

· Operation of automated instruments after proper functioning has been established by MLT's e.g. glucometers

· Set up of serology test, e.g. occult blood, pregnancy tests (need to be read and interpreted by a MLT

· Routine equipment maintenance

· Temperature monitoring of thermally controlled equipment

· Instruct patients in sample collections

· Aids in preparation of lab samples for analysis

· General clerical duties, e.g. transcription checks of results from worksheets to reports, filing and retrieval of records

· Preparation of kits

· Assist lab technologists as needed

· Understands and performs duties in accordance with the policies, process and procedures of the Quality Management System (OLA Accreditation Requirements)

· Adhere to Patient and Occupational Health & Safety responsibilities

· Performs all duties as may be assigned

Employment Type: Permanent Full- Time with temporary assignment in the Laboratory for approximately one year

Start Date: In line with next Hospital Orientation intake or sooner if internal.

Hours of Work: 8-hour shifts; evenings and nights, including weekends.Please be reminded that as a hospital as our operations run 24/7 to provide the necessary patient care, it may be an expectation that you are available to work other shifts not specified above.

Wage: Wage: $30.05 - $31.17 per hour
