McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH), located on the McMaster University campus in Hamilton’s beautiful Westdale neighbourhood, has been providing care to children from across the region since 1988. Here, patients ranging in age from infancy to 17 benefit from a family-centred approach that prioritizes the child’s emotional, mental and physical well-being.

 

The hospital is home to the fastest-growing kids-only emergency department in Ontario, one of Canada’s most advanced neonatal intensive care units, and a range of programs and clinics with unique expertise in a number of areas including children’s cancer, digestive diseases, and mental health.

 

Position Summary

 

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at McMaster Children’s Hospital is a robust department, comprised of 12 level 3 critical care beds, 4 level 2 step down beds, a Pediatric Critical Care Response team and a newly formed Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team, providing medical and surgical care to children and their families across southern Ontario. The interdisciplinary team provides family centered care with a strong focus on evidence based best practice and continuous improvement initiatives. The unit provides specialized care to complex, surgical, oncology, orthopedic, trauma and medical pediatric patient populations utilizing a collaborative approach.

 

The Registered Nurse will work as part of a multidisciplinary team within the Pediatric Intensive l Care Unit (PICU). Our PICU nurses are set up for success and go through a comprehensive onsite orientation program, led by experienced health care professionals and educators. As a member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, the Registered Nurse coordinates and evaluates patient care and provides nursing care according to the standards of practice for Registered Nurses.  PICU nurses provide medical and surgical intensive care within a fast-paced, complex, technological environment. In addition to working within the unit, the Registered Nurse may have the opportunity to work within the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team.

 

Schedule Work Hours

Rotating days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays

 

Qualifications

 

  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
  • Certificate in Pediatric Critical Care or equivalent
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
  • Nursing experience (2 years) in a pediatric setting
  • Current pediatric critical care experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of pediatric pathophysiology and the management and intervention needed to care for children in a critical care environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of pediatric growth and development relating to critical illness, death and dying
  • Demonstrated ability to teach others and knowledge of adult learning principles
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills, especially in stressful situations
  • Demonstrated teamwork, organizational skills, problem-solving and conflict management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to perform well in critical high stress situations
  • Demonstrated ability to be highly motivated and self-directed and responsive to an ever changing environment and patient conditions
  • Previous Leadership experience preferred

As a condition of employment, you are required to submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination to Employee Health Services.

Salary

$34.24 - $49.02 hourly

 

Proficiency in both Official Languages would be an asset.
