Overview

Term: 1 Year

The Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) reports to the Occupational Health Nurse Manager. The primary role of the OHN is to administer and maintain a strong employee health program focused on providing timely and effective first aid, environmental hygiene and health monitoring to employees of the University of Waterloo. The OHN is also required to function as a best practice resource for stakeholders concerning occupational health issues and will have a strong focus on inter-professional collaboration, education, and support of members of the various multi-disciplinary teams working towards employee health and safety.

The OHN is responsible to maintain the privacy and confidentiality of medical records of all employees (faculty staff and Union) according to legislated requirements. The OHN role includes collaboration and implementation, of health surveillance programs including infection control education and surveillance, hazardous materials and health monitoring programs with the Occupational Health Nurse Manager.

Core competencies of the OHN include the following key areas of expertise: clinical practice; case management; regulator/legislative; workers, workplace and the environment; management, business and leadership. health promotion and disease prevention, health and safety education and training.
Responsibilities

Subject Expertise
  • Able to provide support and guidance to various multi-disciplinary teams focused on Occupational
    Health and Safety issues
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation i.e. Human Rights Code of Ontario, OH&S Act, Privacy Legislation, working understanding of WSIB processes, etc. This may include consultation with members of the interdisciplinary team within the limits of confidentiality on specific cases
  • Understand and support a workplace that provides physical and psychological health and safety for all its employees

Employee Education and Infection Prevention and Health Promotion Support
  • Assists with employee health and laboratory staff questions and facilitates the transfer of research knowledge into practical application on a case-by-case or program-wide basis
  • Facilitates regular and ongoing education to enable employees, researchers and laboratory personnel to safely and effectively fulfill their occupational responsibilities. The education will focus on best practice interventions within the scope of practice

Interdisciplinary Team Collaboration
  • In partnership with OHNM, provide departmental leaders advice, opportunities for education and support to employees and administrators on issues pertaining to occupational health including but not limited to: psychological health and safety, risk management, hazardous materials, best practice infection control interventions, all aspects of AED placement on campus (including supporting for departments implementing AED procedures), and health promotion
  • It is critical that the OHN has the ability to share information in an effective and collaborative manner; while maintaining confidentiality
  • Help identify and provide case management to all employees as needed

Clinical Service Provision
  • May be called upon to provides direct Employee Occupational Health-related clinical services in Health Services Monday to Friday as required
  • The OHN provides health teaching and clinical support for other programs/faculties
  • Ability and knowledge to implement early and safe return to work procedures
  • Ability to provide ongoing support, assessment to employees during sick leave
  • Assists employees to obtain appropriate health care or mental health care service in the community
  • Clinical supervision as required for Nursing Students from local post-secondary educational institutions (i.e. Conestoga College) and kinesiology students from the University of Waterloo with guidance from the Occupational Health Nurse Manager

Policy Review and Maintaining Medical Directives
  • Through a structured approach with the Occupational Health Nurse Manager and the University Medical Director, routinely reviews, updates, and obtains approval of relevant policies and medical directives that pertain to the practice of Occupational Health Nursing in the Clinic
  • Administers Public Health Initiatives, in partnership with OHNM and the University Medical Director, ongoing/annual programs including immunizations, screening clinics, and other public health initiatives as appropriate for the employee population
Qualifications

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (required)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred)
  • Canadian Occupational Health Nurses Association (COHNA) - Certificate or Diploma
  • Member in good standing with Ontario Occupational Health Nurses Association
  • Current CPR and AED certification
  • At least 5 years relevant clinical practice experience in an occupational health setting
  • Demonstrated experience in short term disability case management
  • Working knowledge of WSIB process
  • Current knowledge of typical nursing requirements in an employee population including: nursing assessment, medical triage, psychological health and safety, environmental hygiene, immunizations
  • Working knowledge Infection Prevention & Control preferred
  • Working knowledge Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocol
  • Able to administer injections (i.e., immunizations) as ordered by physicians
  • Ability to make clinical decisions within professional domain
  • Highly developed ability to organize time and set priorities effectively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Effective coaching, presentation and training skills
  • Previous experience with an electronic medical record (EMR) program (Parklane Systems Health and Safety Software preferred)
  • Able to input data in CIS
  • A Clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required
  • There may be unusual hours or schedules, multiple and/or tight deadlines beyond one's control and interruptions
Vaccination Requirement Statement

Effective May 1, 2022, the University suspended its Vaccination Requirement. Failure to comply with the Vaccination Requirement if it is reinstated, including failure to comply with any future amendments to the Vaccination Requirement, or failure to comply with new health and safety policies/requirements implemented by the University, including those related to new mandatory employee vaccination, shall result in discipline up to and including termination of employment.

The requirement to be vaccinated, if reinstated, will be subject to the duty to accommodate pursuant to the Human Rights Code.
