Position Overview:
Reporting to the Manager, you will be responsible for providing excellent care to a diverse patient population on the Palliative Care unit. You will be part of a busy 24 bed acute medicine/oncology unit with 18 beds allocated for patients who have chosen a palliative approach to care. Your team focuses on providing specialist pain and symptom management, empathetic, dignified patient/family centered palliative and end-of-life care and high quality acute nursing care. On this unit, there is a staff mix of both RNs and RPNs.

Requirements:
• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Current BCLS
• Recent Palliative Care experience (within the last 3 years)
• Demonstrated expertise in pain and symptom management
• Excellent physical assessment skills, critical thinking and professional judgment
• Experience with management of central venous catheters and venous access devices
• Demonstrated critical thinking and nursing assessment skills for medically complex patient/family populations
• Ability to work in a fast paced, changing environment that focuses on family centered care
• Ability to effectively apply Principles of Adult Learning for patients and families to actively facilitate treatment and education
• Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
• Demonstrates a commitment to customer service when dealing with patients, colleagues and volunteers and other members of the community and public
• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to SHN′s comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff, patient and environmental safety and participation in regular in-service in this area
• Utilize protective equipment provided and identify and reports hazards
• Engages in ethical conduct and strives to understand and appreciate the diversity of our patient/staff population and community
• Excellent work performance and attendance record
• Demonstrates values consistent with SHN′s Code of Conduct and is committed to fostering a healthy and positive work environment in accordance with Health & Safety policy and legislation.
• Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to SHN's comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff safety, patient safety, and environmental safety and participates in regular in-service education in this area.
• Demonstrates excellent work performance and attendance record

• BScN
• Evidence of successful completion of palliative care coursework: Fundamentals of Hospice Palliative Care, CAPCE, DeSouza Palliative Care courses, etc.
• Member of RNAO
• Ability to speak another language
