The Faculty of Applied Health and Community Studies (FAHCS) prepares learners in the Practical Nursing program for a rewarding career working with individuals across the lifespan.  Through this program, students benefit from a high number of hours in field placement where they can directly apply their learning with clients requiring a holistic approach to care; experience which is key to building a professional skillset highly valued by prospective employers.   Accredited by the College of Nurses of Ontario, students are eligible to sit for the Practical Nursing National Exam upon graduation.

What You’ll Be Doing 
 
The successful candidate will teach students in the Practical Nursing program within the School of Nursing in FAHCS.  In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to ongoing program and curriculum development, accreditation and related reviews, as well as representing the Practical Nursing program across different strategic initiatives within Sheridan. The position offers flexibility and independence while providing opportunities for stimulating exchanges with team members and students.   

Sheridan faculty provide academic leadership to programs and courses within their areas of expertise and contribute to a learning-centred environment, where students can develop to their full potential. They also contribute to Sheridan, Faculty and program excellence by collaborating on a variety of initiatives such as new program development, applied research and alternative delivery strategies. Faculty ensure students are aware of course and program learning outcomes, learning strategies and evaluation techniques, through providing individual tutoring, academic counselling and evaluating student progress/achievement within assigned courses.  
 
Specific Responsibilities include: 

  • Ensuring that program and course curricula are current, relevant, and reflective of best practices within the relevant professional/program disciplines 
  • Defining, evaluating, and validating learning outcomes for courses and programs
  • Creating an effective environment for applied learning which accommodates students’ diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, experiences and learning styles 
  • Designing appropriate strategies and tools for facilitating and assessing student learning that are invitational and reflective of best practices in teaching and learning 
  • Developing appropriate strategies and tools to assess student performance that are consistent with the learning outcomes of the course and address multiple learning styles 
  • Developing multi-media materials and alternative delivery strategies, and incorporating appropriate educational technologies into the applied learning process 
  • Ensuring that students are aware of course and program learning outcomes, learning strategies and evaluation techniques; providing individual tutoring and academic counselling; and evaluating student progress/achievement within assigned courses
  • Working with students from diverse educational, religious, and cultural backgrounds

The successful candidate will also meet the following qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in Nursing (MN or MScN), candidates with a PhD in Nursing (or who are in the process of attaining PhD) preferred
  • Registration and member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant clinical experience (current medical/surgical and/or acute care experience will be considered an asset)
  • A minimum of 3 years of classroom and/or lab teaching experience at the post-secondary level

Campus Location: Davis (may be assigned activities at any Sheridan campus). This position is currently working on-campus.
