Salary Range: $33.90- $48.53 per hour (Start rate: determined in accordance with collective agreement requirements)
Hours: Anticipated hours of the position are 22.5 hours per week; Shifts: Days/Nights/Weekends
Status: Permanent Part-Time

University Health Network (UHN) is looking for an experienced professional to fill the key role of a Registered Nurse in our Spine/Neurosurgery Department.

Today, the hospital provides highly specialized tertiary care to people from surrounding areas and across Canada.

This 28-bed unit is a specialized spine unit within the Krembil Neuroscience Centre and one of a few in the country. Our spine patients range from those having neurosurgical spine procedures to those experiencing emergent infectious, oncological, and traumatic processes with potentially devastating consequences. We also care for other neurological/neurosurgical patients.

The majority of patients have diagnoses of:
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Herniated disc
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Spinal tumours and abscesses
  • General neurosurgery excluding SAH, pituitary tumor
  • Neurological disorders
  • Chronic pain disorders

As a member of the UHN and the Nursing Multi-disciplinary Team, the Registered Nurse practices in accordance with relevant legislation/standards, meeting the legal and ethical requirements of the profession. The principal responsibilities include: applying knowledge of nursing science, theory, skill and critical decision making in the provision of compassionate, collaborative and competent care in accordance with the UHN Professional Practice Model for Nursing and the mission and vision of nursing at the UHN; ensuring practice is consistent with professional standards and the ethical framework as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the UHN policy and procedure; demonstrating commitment to professional life long learning by participating in continuing education activities to meet the needs of the patient population served and the standards of the profession; performing reflective practice, analyzing and evaluating nursing knowledge and modifying practice accordingly to improve the quality of nursing and patient care; performing cross-functional and other responsibilities, as assigned and/or requested.

Qualifications:
  • Current Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification
  • Flexible and able to work effectively and efficiently within an interdisciplinary patient care team
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and decision making skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the Units
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) preferred
  • Experience in the care of the Neurosurgery and Neurology patients preferred
