Toronto Western Hospital's Operating Room (OR) is an innovative, world-renowned centre of excellence. The Team performs state of the art quaternary procedures to patient populations in a equitable, diverse and inclusive manner. The interprofessional Team is one of the best in world provides care to patients who require complex surgical intervention. Staff in the OR provide care to patients requiring surgery on an inpatient or outpatient basis depending on advanced individualized care plans.

In the OR, nurses assume one of three positions - circulating nurse, induction nurse or scrub nurse. The circulating nurse directs and co-ordinates all perioperative nursing activities for an individual OR. They are responsible for communicating their knowledge of procedures, asepsis and the use and care of surgical equipment and supplies. The induction nurse is a patient advocate whose main function is to provide psychosocial patient support during the induction and emergent phases of anesthesia and to ensure patient safety. The scrub nurse plays an active role in anticipating the surgical team´s requirement during the surgical intervention in a sterile environment.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn perioperative practice through the online AORN Perioperative Course, interactive simulation labs, and preceptored clinical practice in 3 services.

As a member of the Perioperative Nursing Team, continuing education opportunities include: formalized Preceptorship and Mentorship Programs, Weekly interactive Unit In-services, Lunch n' Learns, Monthly Grand Rounds presented by our Heath Care Partners, Annual Competency Updates and Certification Courses, and Krembil Nursing Award funding to support Nursing research activities. The interprofessional team at TWH utilizes the onsite simulation lab to improve communication and to develop and review technical and functional expertise.

Employees are supported to attend and present at local, provincial and international conferences including our annual Collaborative Interprofessional Surgical Services Conference. Staff can also access Professional Development funding and the Krembil Nursing Awards Scholarship.

The majority of patients require the following types of surgery:
  • Neurosurgery
  • Spinal Surgery
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Hand and Plastics Surgery
  • General Surgery
  • Urological Surgery
  • Ophthalmic Surgery
  • Urgent Hand Procedures

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certification
  • Completion of a recognized Perioperative Nursing course preferred - We would consider sponsoring qualified applicants through a 2022 Perioperative AORN Course
  • BScN preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Vaccines (COVID-19 and others) are a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption on a medical ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.
