POSITION DESCRIPTION: 

The Nursing Resource Team at STEGH provides support to acute in-patient units including the Acute Medical Units (AMU3, AMU4, AMU5), the Surgical In-Patient Unit (2M), and Complex Continuing Care (CCC). A multi-disciplinary team approach is used to deliver quality health care to our patients. The Acute Medical Units care for patients with a wide variety of medical diagnoses, including strokes; the Surgical Unit is comprised of 15 surgical beds with an additional 5 Medical Surgical bed capacity; and the Continuing Care Centre focuses on Rehabilitation, Palliative, Complex and Transitional Care. 

The RN’s within STEGH’s Nursing Resource Team (NRT) will be trained to work between the above noted units. The NRT RN will be assigned to their department upon arrival for each shift.  The RN is responsible for establishing therapeutic relationships with patients and their families through application of specialized knowledge, skill and judgement, both in assessing health needs and in planning, implementing and evaluating patient care.

HOURS:

The successful candidate must be available to work all tours applicable to the department. In addition, this position must be flexible to occasional changes in hours when required to meet the operational needs of the department. 

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Registered Nurse, currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Graduate of a BSc in Nursing or education and experience that allows the RN to practice at full scope
  • Previous one (1) year Acute Medical Care, and/or Surgical, and/or Continuing Care experience within the last three (3) years preferred
  • Current BLS Healthcare Provider Certificate required
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new environments as the department in which the individual is working may change at a moment’s notice commencing and during the scheduled shift
  • Ability to assess changing situations quickly and respond accordingly
  • Medication administration inclusive of IV medication administration, with a physician’s order
  • Experience with initiating IV site and solution, blood transfusions, chest tubes and underwater seals, chest auscultation, PCA and Epidural Analgesia, complicated dressing changes, gastro-intestinal care, airway management, and continuous bladder irrigation
  • Proven ability to work independently utilizing strong organizational, leadership and problem-solving skills
  • Proven assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation skills related to acute medical nursing
  • Continuing education in heart & stroke preferred
  • Continuing education in geriatric nursing preferred
  • Palliative Care Fundamentals (Level 1) preferred
  • Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) and P.I.E.C.E.S certification preferred
  • Safe Management Certification preferred
  • Basic computer skills (Outlook, Electronic Patient Record)
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of essential duties of the position
