General Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Supervisor, Urban Health, Supervised Consumption Service, the Casual Registered Nurse works as part of a multi-disciplinary integrated Supervised Consumption Service (SCS) / Consumption and Treatment Services (CTS) team as well as part of the larger healthcare team in the centre. The Relief SCS RN provides health care and treatment for clients who use drugs in the SCS, many of whom have soft tissue damage and injuries, chronic illnesses as well as complex health and social needs. With a knowledge and appreciation of the impacts of colonization, violence, and trauma on individuals and communities, the RN works to build rapport with clients in order to establish the basis of a therapeutic relationship. Taking histories, performing physicals, assessing needs, and providing treatment within the RN scope of practice and under medical directives are a daily feature of the work, as is responding to overdoses and providing harm reduction education to clients.
The incumbent will have an undergraduate degree in nursing with current registration as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario, as well as RNAO membership. 1-3 years of experience in a community setting, or combination of community hospital or public health settings, knowledge of harm reduction, available health services, social services and substance use treatment services is required. Experience working with people who use drugs, Indigenous people, people who engage in sex work, prisoners/ex-prisoners, people with mental health challenges is an asset, as is proficiency in a language other than English.
