Job Description - Registered Practical Nurse (RPN)

Place of Employment: The client's home (house, apartment/condo, retirement home, Long Term Care/Nursing home, temporary home, and other work sites as required.

Reports to: Supervisor

Job Summary: RPN is a front-line position acting as a representative of Aegis Care Management (Aegis Care) and providing the services offered by Aegis Care. Your duties are not limited to those listed as the position has a wide scope of duties at times, dependent on the client and always under the auspices of Aegis Care. You will mostly work independently of co-workers or supervisors and therefore must balance good judgement and initiative along with the policies of Aegis Care and the regulations of the profession.

It is the responsibility of an RPN to perform routine treatments and services in the delivery of care to clients. You will provide information, health promotion, and education to unregulated care providers and family members as required, and you will be required to build rapport with clients and their families and report any concerns to the Supervisor.

It should be noted that emphasis is for the RPN to involve the client in the care program to help provide the client with the basic standards of healthy living as follows:

Work Hours: This position may require various shifts at various times (including nights, weekends, and sleep-over) in one or more work sites.

Duties: The following list of duties is a guideline of possible duties to be performed independently or as a group of duties in the course of working with the client. Your duties include but are not limited to the following:

1. Preparing and administering medications and treatments with knowledge of purpose and adverse effects of nursing care provided

2. Completing all documentation for observation, planning, and evaluation of care provided to clients, including orders by physicians

3. Providing guidance and support to Personal Support Workers (PSWs) and Healthcare Aides (HCA) with relation to client care

4. Maintaining open lines of communication and provide necessary communication to the healthcare team at Aegis Care, the client's physicians, therapists, family members and other partners involved in their care

5. Acting on the client's behalf to uphold their rights and prevent abuse of any form

6. Acting on First Aid knowledge in an emergency situation

7. Being aware of safety concerns in the home or with the client, and performing your duties in a safe manner and reinforcing safety practices and measures

8. Maintaining strict confidentiality of client's personal and health information

9. Working as a team member

10. Ability to perform the following physical activities: Kneeling, Stooping, Standing, Reaching, Pulling/pushing, Walking, Grasping, Moving fingers, Hearing, Talking, Sitting, Repetitive motions.


1. Current RPN license with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and a member in good standing

2. Practice/Liability insurance

3. Current CPR and First Aid

4. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation

5. Vulnerable Sector police check required

6. Ability to work independently

7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

8. Compassionate, patient, and caring nature

9. Able to work in a stressful environment

10. Must be physically and mentally fit to handle the demands of care giving

General Notes:

You will be required to maintain a safe working environment for yourself and the client.

There may be emergency situations where you will have to act quickly and with sound judgement.
