Disability Claims Specialist, Registered Nurse - Independent Contractor

Gordon Food Service is looking for a Disability Claims Specialist to manage occupational and non-occupational claims. Focusing on facilitating and promoting an early and safe return-to-work plan, the Disability Claims Specialist will obtain and review objective medical information, oversee modified work programs, and utilize expedited health care strategies.



  • Manage all WSIB and STD claims for the Ontario Division

  • In conjunction with the Health and Safety Manager and Supervisors, review occupational injuries and file Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) claims and Long Term Disability (LTD) Claims in accordance with the Attendance Program, WSIB legislation, LTD contract and all applicable policies, and legislation

  • Communicate with key stakeholders, employees, and health care providers to adjudicate and manage return to work plans for occupational and non-occupational injuries, while ensuring all parties are in agreement.

  • Identify and assess medical and non-medical influencing factors pre and post disability, functional capability, restrictions and limitations to better understand what support is needed to assist employees  back to work

  • Provide a comprehensive and positive approach to support employees in the maintenance of regular work attendance, integrating; disability management, attendance management and wellness.

  • Tracks and reports on occupational absences and progression of Return to Work plans to WSIB.

  • Monitor claims for areas of objection and then submit objections/appeals to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board or liaise with an in-house legal as appropriate.

  • Provide advice and support to management and staff with regards to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policies, procedures, and programs, ensuring the organization is in regulatory compliance

  • Provide support for workplace health & safety and wellness programs

  • Share and maintain knowledge of related government legislation and regulations

  • Provide clinical occupational health nursing support as required

  • Work closely with the Human Resources team to ensure the department functions in a well-coordinated and professional manner



  • Current registration, in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario, BScN preferred

  • Degree/Diploma in Occupational Health or Disability Management

  • 3 years experience with workplace claims management and absence administration.

  • Technically proficient with a solid understanding of disability claim issues, legislative environment and the outsourced business

  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills, proven ability to research, follow up and resolve complex issues or problems surfaced by client group

  • The ability to work independently while maintaining collaborative relationships with internal & external contacts

  • Strong computer skills

  • Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills

  • Strong customer service focus

  • Professional attitude that demonstrates results-oriented and open to a changing environment
