School Nurse

(12-month position)

As a member of Crescent Student Services, the School Nurse provides primary care to students and staff. This includes assessing health needs of ill or injured individuals and administering first aid or medication, maintaining appropriate medical records and consent forms, promoting programs and ensuring staff are aware of relevant policies related to the health and wellbeing of students. The nurse oversees the care of children during the school-year and the summer programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess and provide primary care to students and staff at school, document medical visits and maintain accurate student health records
  • Ensure the safety of students with allergies and anaphylaxis
  • Review, implement and promote the School’s health policies and programs
  • Collaborate with administration, teachers, and parents/guardians to support students health, including management of chronic illness and recovery from acute illness or injury
  • Act as a resource to students on health topics (e.g. sleep, mental health, nutrition, and exercise)
  • Ensure that an adequate stock of medical supplies and safety equipment is available, and maintain first aid kits and AEDs for common areas, classrooms, coaches and excursions
  • Act as a liaison with community services and communicate medical alerts to the Crescent community
  • Maintain confidentiality of medical information and provide health information as appropriate  for coaches and school excursion leaders

 

The successful candidate will have:

  • Registered Nurse with a BSc in Nursing, with at least 5 years of nursing experience including pediatric nursing
  • Experience in a hospital or school setting; emergency experience is an asset
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario and current certification in CPR, AED and first aid
  • Excellent physical assessment skills and expert knowledge of nursing processes (assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating) and the ability to utilize this process in a variety of situations
  • Excellent knowledge of Health and Safety Law as applied to a school environment
  • Demonstrated ability to manage issues in a calm and solutions-oriented manner and remain calm in a crisis
  • Ability to work with confidential medical information in a discrete manner
  • Ability to use medical chart software effectively
  • Strong communication skills; empathy 
  • Growth mindset, curiosity and willingness to accept new perspectives
  • Compassion, and a desire to cultivate courage and nurture connection
  • A passionate team player and contributor to a coaching culture of growth and development
  • A strong desire to become fully immersed in the School’s positive and progressive culture
