Our Critical Care Unit offers state of the art care for cardiac, medical and surgical critically ill patients. 

Our Critical Care Registered Nurses are charged with the care of the most vulnerable patients and their families.  Using the latest technologies and working with interdisciplinary teams they deliver compassionate patient-centred care.


The Critical Care Surge Unit is pleased to offer up to 7 Registered Nurses who do not have experience working in Critical Care but are otherwise qualified and interested in Full Time positions in Critical Care at Humber River Hospital, paid tuition and time to attend the Critical Care Certificate Program at George Brown College, including 4 days of simulation and unit orientation with preceptors and ongoing evaluations.(Some restrictions may apply)

Due to current conditions the program is currently being offered via virtual classroom and does require online attendance as well as placement:  this is not a self directed program.  The college does reserve the right to alter the method of delivery.    The college does not offer the program to International Students.    

Successful applicants must be available to attend school for the full duration of 13 weeks commencing September 7, 2021, to December 3, 2021.  You will also be required to attend training for two days the week prior to school in person at the hospital on Thursday September 2nd and Friday September 3rd 2021.

Reporting Relationship: Managers of Critical Care

Hourly Rate Range: $33.90 to $48.53

Schedule Requirements:   Must be available days, nights, weekends and statutory holidays. 

Location: Wilson


Position Responsibilities

  • Care of acutely ill cardiac, medical and surgical patients.
  • Care of patients requiring hemodynamic and ventilation monitoring by means of invasive and non- invasive approaches.
  • Operating life support systems including slow low-efficiency dialysis (SLED)
  • Care planning and coordination of care with various team members embracing patient centered care.
  • Excellent teamwork, decision-making and interpersonal communication skills are essential
  • Utilization of computerized systems for documentation of patient care.
  • Participation in project teams and organizational committees as required.


  • Current RN registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario required.
  • Current BCLS certification required; ACLS preferred. 
  • Minimum 1 year Medical/ Surgical experience.
  • ICU Experience and Critical Care Certificate preferred.
  • Experience in working on a Nurse Lead Rapid Response Team preferred
  • Experience in cardiac care, telemetry and acute medicine/surgery required.
  • Completed Ontario Post-Secondary Institution Coronary Care (Level 1) Course required. 
  • Coronary Care 2 preferred
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Good problem solving skills required. 
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to work with a multidisciplinary team, patients, family members and visitors.
  • Excellent organizational skills with an ability to set priorities and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated good patient assessment skills.
  • Patient assessment course preferred.
  • Excellent attendance and discipline free record required.
