3A Medical/Surgical ICU and 5.2 Medical/Surgical Neuro ICU are located at Nova Scotia's largest healthcare facility, the QEII Health Sciences Centre. We are an academic teaching centre and are affiliated with Dalhousie University and provide a learning environment for many healthcare professionals as well as opportunities for research and advances in care.


Our Nurses work in a collaborative environment with strong interprofessional teams, focused on a patient-centred care model in a richly diverse workspace. Under the direction and general supervision of the Health Services Manager, the Registered Nurse (RN) utilizes the nursing process, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to provide quality, safe, and patient-family centred care. The RN is responsible for the overall coordination and direction of nursing care in the ICU. The RN provides clinical leadership, particularly in complex or unpredictable patient/client care settings. The RN has the knowledge, skill and judgment needed to provide competent, evidence-based nursing practice to the critically ill patient. The RN is accountable for the development, implementation and ongoing evaluation of the plan of care to achieve patient/client outcomes. The RN supports the development of students and colleagues through acting as a preceptor and providing ongoing mentorship. The RN contributes to the efficient and effective functioning of the unit, coordination of patient care and staffing. The RN accepts responsibility for maintaining and continually enhancing competencies through ongoing professional development including participation in education programs, research and continuous quality activities. The RN practices according to the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses, the Nova Scotia College of Nursing Standards of Nursing Practice, specialty standards as applicable and the policies and procedures of Nova Scotia Health. The RN is responsible and accountable for his/her nursing practice and conduct as defined by the Nova Scotia College of Nursing and for ensuring that his/her registration is current and valid.


  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Current, or eligible for, registration with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN)
  • Critical Care experience or equivalent required
  • Completion of an approved Critical Care Nursing Program preferred
  • BLS certification required
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and assessment skills coupled with sharp problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Where there are no qualified applicants consideration will be given to the following:

  • Critical Care experience without completion of a Critical Care Nursing Program
  • Emergency nursing experience and/or the completion of Emergency Nursing Program

Successful candidates may be eligible for a signing bonus and/or relocation assistance based on the needs and resources of the home unit and qualifying criteria, conditional upon the signing of a Return of Service Agreement.
