About the Work

The Registered Nurse (RN), Obstetrics reports directly to the Manager, Maternal Child Services, as part of a team providing care for low to high-risk clients of the Obstetrical Unit. The unit averages 600 births per year and consists of 2 antepartum assessment rooms, 3 labour rooms, and 7 postpartum rooms for patients and their newborns, 35 weeks gestational age and up. The RN, Obstetrics is required to work in all areas and must have completed specialized training in order care for individuals during the birthing process.

Clients served includes those admitted for a caesarean birth, and postsurgical obstetrical and gynelogical care. The client medical outcomes range from predictable to unpredictable. The RN, Obstetrics may be responsible for a number of clients at any given time, and independently makes day-to-day decisions regarding individual nursing care plans based on orders from the physician. The incumbent is required to be motivated and innovative in the area of continuing education and practice to encourage the professional growth of self and others.

One permanent (indeterminate) and one term position are currently available in Yellowknife.

Typically these positions require a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing with at least one (1) year of obstetrics experience.
