SCHOOL NURSE - FULL TIME CONTINUING POSITION

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The School Health Program requires a Public Health Nurse who can build and maintain strong relationships to deliver the school population with health and safety strategies to assist with Covid-19 Support at both school locations. 

Reporting to the Chief People Officer, the School Nurse must work in a self-directed manner within a collaborative team environment to promote and deliver services using a comprehensive whole school health approach that encompases a range of infection prevention and mental health initiatives for both students and staff.  

This position works within the parameters outlined by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Children and Youth Services, Health Protection and Promotion Act, Public Health Standards (OPHS) and Protocols and other relevant legislation; Conducting disease case investigation, contact follow-up and outbreak management; coordinating immunization and developing, implementing and evaluating mental health promotion strategies, both individually and in collaboration with the UTS Wellness group; and working with a variety of individuals and groups at UTS and other organizations This position is to work directly with the COVID-19 School Team and liases regularly with Toronto Public Health, and Public Health Ontario.

Team Specific Responsibilities: 

  • Understand, establish, and monitor infection prevention and control practices in general and as they have been tailored to  the school’s environment in relation to COVID-19. 
  • Utilize an understanding of adolescent health and principles of youth engagement in anticipating, preventing, andmanaging related challenges including those areas impacted by COVID-19 and/or return to school (e.g., mental health and wellness, family violence, substance use).
  • Provide key community supports and resources that may be available for information and referral in conjunction with work with students, teachers, families and administrators. 
  • Outline key aspects of COVID-19 and utilize this knowledge to inform clear communication, health teaching and all other activities related to prevention, case and contact management, monitoring, assessment, testing surveillance, reporting, and documentation. 
  • Perform case and contact management and outbreak management. 
  • Identify the areas of need that may be identified during a school community assessment, particularly within the current COVID-19 context (e.g., mental health promotion).
  • Ensure that all relevant COVID-19 policies and guidelines are updated regularly on the school’s website and internal staff conference site, to reflect current government and public health  guidelines and school updates.

General Responsibilities: 

  • Apply knowledge regarding concepts of population health status, inequities in health, determinants of health, and strategies for health protection and promotion to guide practice.
  • Guide workplace and learning accommodations in support of staff and students with medical issues requiring special support.
  • Utilize research and evidence and apply critical appraisal skills to inform policies, programs and practice.
  • Provide health information, teaching and counselling to students, staff and families.
  • Facilitate staff and student engagement in identifying and defining health issues, including mental health issues,  using community development and community assessment skills. 
  • Participate in the planning, developing, implementation and evaluation of school wide and site specific public health strategies using Evidence Informed Decision Making (EIDM).
  • Advocate for and contribute to the development of health & safety policies.
  • Collaborate with Student Services and the School’s Social Worker(s) to identify and address health issues and service gaps in order to achieve improved mental health outcomes. 
  • Demonstrate culturally sensitive approaches and strategies to address diverse populations.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Participate in research initiatives, and mentorship opportunities as appropriate.
  • Adhere to public health and nursing ethical standards and principles.
  • Fulfill legal and professional obligations and responsibilities in accordance with relevant legislation and departmental policies, procedures and medical directives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned which support the organizational health & safety goals 
  • Respond to public health emergencies, significant events and incidents as required by the Health Protection and Promotion Act and Emergency Standards 

Qualifications:

  • A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or equivalent recognized by a Canadian University
  • Current license to practise as a Registered Nurse by the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Experience in public health or community health nursing is preferred 
  • Must have a valid Standard First Aid with adult/child/ CPR, or be willing to be certified; CPR-Level C preferred.

  • Ability to apply appropriate theory and learning principles to practice
  • Knowledge of Independent and/or public secondary schools would be an asset.

Compensation: This position is unionized with USW.  Salary and vacation entitlement are based on a grid.
