With 23 acute care beds, 26 long-term care beds, a 24-hour emergency department and a heliport, Geraldton District Hospital provides an array of services, including clinical nutrition, diagnostic imaging, laboratory, outreach chemotherapy, rehabilitation, social work and telemedicine.
Geraldton District Hospital is seeking an Acute/Emergency Nurse Manager who, as a key member of the Management Team, will organize and direct the work of the Acute Care and Emergency departments, implementing programs and services to ensure that effective quality patient- and family-centred care is provided, while complying with established standards and applicable legislation.
With these goals in mind, you’ll communicate and facilitate the implementation of regulated acts, hospital and departmental policies, procedures, standards and protocols, identify and promote quality initiatives for both departments, and provide leadership, direction and guidance to nursing staff, while ensuring appropriate unit staffing levels within the approved budget.
A skilled coach and mentor, you’ll evaluate staff performance and provide feedback, identify departmental general education needs, recommend educational opportunities, and provide coaching on applicable processes, policies and procedures. You’ll work collaboratively with the Staff Educator in training nursing staff on new equipment, supervising and coordinating nursing education program activities, and providing orientation and preceptorship for nursing employees, student placements, patients, families and others.
The Hospital, your peers and your team will look to you as a resource person regarding complex clinical issues and questions, determining patient priorities and interdisciplinary plans of action/care, problem-solving difficult situations, addressing patient, family and team concerns, and ensuring that all appropriate clinical information is communicated to all shifts. Success in this position will be driven by your ability to continually evaluate the quality of nursing practice on a continuous basis, advocate and implement improved practices, keep informed of current patient status, and facilitate communication between medical staff, nurses, families, other departments and healthcare professionals for continuity of care.
As the qualified Acute/Emergency Nurse Manager this challenging role demands, you’ll have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario. These credentials are complemented by no fewer than seven (7) years’ clinical experience in Acute and Emergency Nursing, at least five (5) years’ management and supervisory experience in a unionized healthcare setting, and a desire for continuous learning in an evolving environment
Through such a background, you’ve demonstrated your initiative in managing multiple priorities, excellent organizational, interpersonal and time management skills, and competency in working with management and staff at all levels. French/English bilingualism, a Diploma in Healthcare Management, and knowledge and understanding of the local Indigenous cultures and languages would all be considered assets.
