Holland Christian Homes has provided a continuim of care to the elderly in Peel Region for nearly 50 years.  Our facility houses approximately 1,000 seniors in six apartment buildings (independent living) and 240 long-term care (LTC) residents.  We provide varying degrees of care and assistance to meet the needs of our residents and tenants while seeking to promote independence as long as possible.


Holland Christian Homes seeks to preserve dignity and promote a high quality of life for our residents, who are primarily of Dutch heritage. We offer a supportive network of services delivered by a multidisciplinary team including, medical and social support by way of nurses, social workers, dietitians, and medical professionals including a restorative care team, and support from a spiritual care team.

Job Description

Position Summary:

The Nurse Supervisor is responsible for assisting the Director of Resident Care in the operation of the nursing department including: dealing with family and resident concerns, ongoing assessments, monitoring delivery of care, auditing, assisting in the planning, organizing, coordinating, implementing and continued evaluation of departmental policies and procedures and mentoring, supporting and coaching staff. The Nursing Supervisor assists in the training and evaluation of nursing staff and promotes health and safety of work practices.



  • Post - RN education, certification or degree in nursing administration and management.  Preference is BScN and/or business degree in health management, particularly long-term care, with further education in gerontology, geriatrics or rehabilitation.

  • Must possess a current Certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

  • Current membership with Gerontological Nursing Association (GNA) and Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) is desirable

  • 3 years supervisory experience

  • 3 years relevant experience in a long-term care facility including infection control
  • CPR Certified

  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to speak Dutch in addition to English would be an asset

  • Strong management and written and verbal communication skills

  • Proven leadership abilities including a proven track record of inspiring and motivating employee performance

  • Extensive knowledge of Infection Control Practices and MOHLTC Inspection Protocols

  • Ability to work flexible hours dependent upon demands

  • Computer knowledge of PCC, MDS-RAI, computerized Care Plans essential


Major Responsibilities:

Management of Nursing Services

  • With the DRC, develop and interpret the philosophy, objectives, policies and procedures and standards of services for the Nursing Department.

  • Participate in the holistic care of each resident by making regular rounds on the nursing units. Follow up with staff regarding any ill residents and those for whom significant problems were identified on the 24-hour report.

  • With the assistance of the Director of Resident Care, develops and re-evaluates job descriptions / job routines annually or as required.

  • Ensure that all Registered Nursing staff receives probationary, disciplinary and annual performance reviews. Ensure that Registered Nursing Staff provide PSW/HCA staff with probationary, disciplinary and annual performance reviews.

Planning, Implementing and Assessing Resident Care / Resident Safety

  • Assists the Director of Resident Care in developing and implementing the departmental goals and objectives.

  • Assists in ensuring that all departmental programs meet or exceed established standards which promote a high quality of resident care.

  • Assists the DRC in counseling and /or crisis intervention with residents and/or families and/or staff.

Quality of Life

  • Pursue the best possible outcomes that can be achieved within Holland Christian Homes resources in the delivery of long-term care for resident-driven wellness of body, mind, emotions and spirit.

  • Support the delivery of services that promote quality of life for residents with special needs through:

  • Individual quality care provided in a safe, secure environment that promotes trust and friendship.

  • Management of dysfunctional behaviors to reduce or eliminate disruptive behaviors by use of therapeutic communication and environmental manipulation, resulting in reduction of injury to resident and staff.

  • Improved quality of life though enjoyment of individualized sensory stimulation activities including frequent provision for pet therapy.

Infection Control Nurse – Infection Control Committee

  • Act as Co-Chairperson (GM and FM Nursing Supervisors) of the Infection Control Committee (along with Towers Nursing).

  • Serve as liaison between the Committee members and Holland Christian Homes staff.

  • Promote staff awareness of the philosophy and objectives of the Infection Control program.

  • Co-ordinate surveillance programs; maintain the established system of records on incidence of infection and submit summarized reports to the committee.

Monitoring and Control

  • Responsible for the inventory and control of nursing supplies and products.

  • Maintain appropriate use of nursing equipment and supplies provided.

  • Ensure all hazardous supplies are securely maintained at all times.

Staff Development and Education

  • Attend conferences, seminars and workshops including the annual mandatory training.

  • Arrange and/or support Inservice Education based on the identified needs of the department or an individual staff

  • Participate in the competency of nursing staff by a process of audits for the performance of specific skills/tasks.

  • Attend educational and learning opportunities within the community to keep abreast of new developments within the field of nursing and LTC services.

  • Assists in the supervision of Nursing students and supervises the initial orientation of RNs, RPNs, and HCA/PSW.

  • Assists the DRC in ensuring that registered staff are trained and knowledgeable on the Nursing computer software and other nursing standards of practice like MOH Standards, RQI and CMI documentation.

  • Support education and research.

Resident/Family Relations

  • Monitor resident/family and staff satisfaction of quality of nursing services. Report any concerns to the Director of Resident Care so they can be documented and immediately addressed.

  • Keep residents/families/next-of-kin informed of current problems or concerns related to nursing services within the building.

  • Participate in the admission orientation process of new residents and their families

Staff Scheduling

  • With the DRC, responsible for ensuring the staff schedule is adhered to and appropriate staffing levels as per budget.

  • Assists with filling call-in shifts after hours and on weekends when the scheduler is not available and nursing supervisor is on site.



The core hours of this position are 1100h to 1900h.
