Geriatric Psychiatry
Parkwood Institute - Mental Health Care Building
Full Time

We are seeking a Clinical Nurse Specialist to work collaboratively within a comprehensive interdisciplinary team in the Geriatric Psychiatry Program. The Clinical Nurse Specialist will provide specialized clinical consultation and leadership within the program, participate in the education of staff and clinical community partners concerning the clinical specialty of geriatric psychiatry and incorporate best practice and research findings to promote quality patient care.

The Geriatric Psychiatry Program at Parkwood Institute is part of an integrated system of specialized care for the elderly and offers both in-patient and ambulatory mental health services for aging individuals with serious mental illness. The program is linked to the University of Western Ontario and the Southwest Geriatric Assessment Network in supporting knowledge transfer and capacity building in care of older adults with mental illness.

Essential Qualifications

  • Provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps rubella and varicella (chicken pox)
  • Provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Masters of Science in Nursing (MScN) or Masters of Nursing (MN) or health care related Masters degree
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with the concomitant physical and mental health care issues faced by the elderly.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skill and expertise in best practice patterns and translating them into clinical practice related to presentations of depression, dementia ,delirium, and psychosis in the elderly
  • Advanced knowledge and skills with a multi-system focus in mental health assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, consultative support and evaluation specific to the care of patients with mental illness
  • Superior interpersonal, coaching and communication skills to effectively work patients, families, staff and community partners
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Ability to demonstrate a facilitative teaching approach with patients, families, staff and community partners
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting and/or promoting research use in practice
  • Demonstrated shared leadership experience
