I work full-time as a Field Nurse Case Manager for Shoppers Drug Mart Specialty Health Network. On weekends, I give back to my community by working in the Emergency Room of Brantford General Hospital, alternating with a casual job in Brantford's best Long-Term Care - John Noble Home as a Nurse Manager.

Mid-career.

What made you decide to choose nursing as a career path?
I chose nursing as a career because I love learning new things. As a nurse, I am always challenging myself to keep current on medical trends and training so that I can provide the best care to my patients. Every day as a nurse, I learn something new from my colleagues and patients, which inspires me to explore a deeper knowledge of the techniques and procedures I use.
What made you choose your specialty in nursing?
Anyone who’s ever been hospitalized or received medical services from an outpatient care clinic on an ongoing basis knows how frustrating that experience can be. The duties of a Nurse Case Manager involve making that experience less frustrating by evaluating available treatment options and choosing the ones best suited to meet a particular patient’s physical and psychological needs. Nurses in Case Management understand medical resource allocation. They multitask across a wide variety of disciplines in order to help ensure their clients receive optimal treatment.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Being a nurse is one of the most challenging jobs someone could do. It’s physically and mentally demanding at times. However, at the end of the day, you feel amazing satisfaction and pride. Being able to help those in need of a living is unlike any other profession.
What is something that you wish you knew when you started your career?
Nursing does not end with providing care at the bedside. We are multifaceted. Nurses can be present in the field of academia, pharmacy, community, and administration.
Is there a particular sector of nursing that you would like to experience in the future?
My dream is to become a healthcare organization leader. I may not always be hands-on with patients, but I surely will be helping to support or lead the individuals who are in need. I wanted to help manage health information and ensure patients are moved through the care process efficiently. I want to be part of the team that gathers clinical records for research and analysis to identify gaps or obstacles in quality care.
