Hours: 37.5 hours per week

The ARC is a short-term, 24/7 medical respite program for persons who are homeless or at risk of being homeless who suffer from an acute medical condition and can manage in a community setting with nursing and daily living support.

Description:
The Registered Nurse (RN) understands the impact of the broad determinants of health on people’s ability to attend to their health care needs and provides care within a health promotion framework. They will have familiarity with the health issues that are experienced by homeless and other marginalized persons and will work in partnership with care providers, both internally at Sherbourne and externally, in the community to improve the health of clients accessing the ARC program.

Duties include: Providing direct nursing assessment and treatment. Completes comprehensive nursing assessments. Administers appropriate treatment/course of action. Develops and maintains currency of care plans. Administers prescribed medications and treatments. Documents according to Sherbourne and Nursing standards. Provide health teaching to clients. Provides care for clients pre and post operatively; with an acute medical issue; undergoing cancer treatment where their health outcome can improve after a short term stay.

Qualifications:

Education:
• Current Registration with the Ontario College of Nurses in the General Class; BScN preferred or extensive nursing experience.

Experience:
• Experience obtained in either primary care, community setting or acute care is preferred.
• At least three years experience working with persons marginalized by social location including homelessness, poverty, sexual identity, gender identity, residency status.
• Experience with communities facing barriers to accessing health care due to social isolation, homelessness, mental health and substance use issues.
• Understands the health care system - both within Sherbourne and in general.
• Knowledge of available resources accessible to clients (e.g. food banks, local shelters, mental health programmes, etc.).

Skills and Abilities:
• Excellent assessment, and treatment planning skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to adapt communication style to audience.
• Developed conflict management and problem solving skills.
• Works effectively independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
• Demonstrated knowledge of clinical theories and practices, and the basic determinants of health.
• Demonstrates an understanding of working within an anti-oppression framework.

Conditions of Employment:
• Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a Police Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
• Understand and maintain compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), the Ontario Human Rights Code and other relevant legislation.

Working Conditions:
• Clients may have mental health and substance use issues which result in behaviours that can be disruptive and challenging. The RN will need to respond accordingly and feel comfortable responding to medical and other crisis situations as needed.
• The ARC program is a 24/7 unit. The position requires the ability to work flexible 12.5 hour shifts including regular evenings, nights, and weekends.
• Comfortable with multi-tasking, several disruptions within his/her work day, and making independent decisions, in consultation with others.
