Better Living Health and Community Services is a charitable nonprofit community service organization that has been providing services to seniors and older adult living with disabilities in the Don Mills area for over 40 years.  

Better Living will be the operator of the Margaret Bahen Hospice for York Region, located in Newmarket, Ontario, and scheduled to open in the fall of 2017.  This 10-bed residential hospice will provide 24-hour care to terminally ill residents in a warm, home-like environment, ensuring that their physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological needs are met.  The residential hospice will serve about 250 residents and their families from York Region and surrounding areas, each year.

Committed to becoming a centre of excellence for the delivery of hospice palliative care services, Better Living Health and Community Services has an exciting new opportunity for a Director of Care, Residential Hospice Services.

The Director of Care, Residential Hospice Services will lead the planning, development, management and oversight of all clinical and residential care services at Margaret Bahen Hospice for York Region. 


Job Description

The Successful Candidate for this Position Must Have the Following Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BScN) required; Master of Science in Nursing (MScN) preferred
  • Post-RN education, certification or degree in nursing administration and management preferred
  • Demonstrated experience or additional certification in the specialty area i.e. CAPCE, CAN certification in Hospice Palliative Care Nursing
  • A minimum of 7 years of clinical experience with at least 3 years of experience in a palliative setting
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant management level experience, preferably in a hospice palliative care setting
  • Current registration with RNAO required
  • Canadian Nurses Association current certification in Hospice Palliative Nursing Care (CHPCN) preferred
  • Advanced CPR certification 
  • Health and Safety Certification preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in building palliative care capacity within an organization and in the community
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team environment
  • Excellent analytical, interpretive and communication skills. Exhibit an ability to be flexible, open and non-judgemental

 

The Successful Candidate for this Position Must be able to:

  • Understand and support the Mission, Vision & Values of the hospice

  • Plan, organize, direct and supervise the activities of the Nursing Department, Environmental Services, and Food Services departments to provide quality Resident care

  • Oversee the admissions to the hospice, establish and implement waitlist and triaging criteria

  • Demonstrate a highly developed ability to listen; communicate goals; share knowledge, experience and responsibility when dealing with direct reports, employees and residents and their families

  • Implement and monitor control and safekeeping of drugs and narcotics, and to supervise the drug administration program of the hospice including the administration of medication by all registered staff.

  • Direct and monitor the maintenance of health care records to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and the quality of care for Residents

  • Investigate incidents and complaints in order to identify appropriate corrective actions

  • Monitor and review Resident care to ensure the standard of care is maintained and the programs of the home are aligned with best practice standards

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant Provincial and Federal Acts and regulations

  • Assist the Senior Vice President in the preparation and implementation of the budget

  • Provide leadership during review processes conducted by regulatory bodies

  • Coordinate and monitor the Infection Prevention and Control Program

  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of personnel

  • Develop , review and update Nursing Policies and Procedures ensuring the compliance of professional staff with the established standards

  • Demonstrate superior leadership, organization, research, evaluation, time management and communication skills

  • Multi-task related to the delivery of efficient primary care including the ability to share information and teach while treating a resident

  • Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in current, evidence-based methods and practices of Nursing and hospice/palliative care and delivery

  • Possess a passionate commitment to excellence and ability to utilize and support team based continuous quality improvement techniques

  • Demonstrate a consultative team-based management style and strong problem-solving skills

  • Possess an understanding of the Ontario health care system

  • Adhere to the Policies and Procedures as outlined in the Personnel Manual.

  • Follow the principles and expectations outlined in the Code of Conduct.
