Job Description

Position Description:

As a registered nurse you will become an integral member of the interprofessional team responsible for the comprehensive care of Medical Day Unit/Chemotherapy Clinic patients.  You will practice in an environment where the emphasis is on professional practice and customer satisfaction.


Using your clinical expertise, you will, in collaboration with the interprofessional team, be responsible for comprehensive assessment, care planning and patient education.  In addition, you will utilize your demonstrated clinical leadership skills, and your well developed analytical, problem solving, delegation and interpersonal skills to assist you in the provision of quality patient/family centred care.  Specific areas of responsibilities will include:

  • Accessing indwelling venous devices (i.e. Ports, Hickmans, PICCs)
  • Handling and administration of chemotherapy
  • IV initiation for chemotherapy, sedation, antibiotics and steroids
  • Venipuncture
  • Assisting the physician with various procedures, e.g. thoracentesis, paracentesis, bone marrow, biopsy and epidural injections
  • Assessing, teaching and supporting new chemotherapy patients
  • Acting as a resource and role model, including mentoring/coaching staff
  • Promoting and supporting a positive working relationship, effective team building and functioning with all staff
  • Identifying and problem solving potential risk issues


Position Qualifications:

  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses
  • Current BCLS certification
  • Minimum of 2 years current experience in an oncology or chemotherapy environment
  • Completion of the CNA Oncology Certification, or a commitment to complete within 2 years of hire is required
  • Completion of deSouza Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Administration Certification, or a commitment to complete within 2 years of hire.
  • RNAO membership is preferred
  • Excellent physical assessment and patient education skills
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to a patient/family centred care environment
  • Demonstrated excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within an interprofessional team as well as independently
  • Well developed organization, communication, interpersonal and teaching skills
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development, continuing education and leadership experience
  • Demonstrated good attendance and performance records with the ability to maintain these same standards
  • Demonstrated commitment to a healthy and safe workplace for self and others (staff, patients, families, etc.) by taking all reasonable precautions and working in compliance with hospital related policies, health and safety legislation and best practices and completing relevant mandatory education as required
