In conjunction with the Operations Director, Manager and the multidisciplinary team, the Resource Nurse coordinates the daily activities of the NICU and Paediatric Unit in accordance with RVH policies and standards of care. This person will be expected to take an active role in the continuous quality improvements (CQI) of the department and assist with the developmental and implementation of specific CQI activities.

Responsibilities include:
Clinical Practice:

  • Assigns patient workloads based on the ability, availability, learning needs of staff and patient acuity ensuring that the CNO three factor framework is utilized in decision making. Revises patient assignments to accommodate changes in status of patients, staff and the NICU and Paediatric Units
  • Coordinates patient admissions, transfers and discharges including transports to other health care facilities.
  • Acts as a clinical resource to person for staff members. Assists with problem solving for nursing decisions regarding patient care.
  • Acts as a role model, coach and mentor for both the NICU and Paediatric Unit
  • Promotes and encourages communication between the patient, family and health care team.
  • Collaborates and acts as a liaison with other members of the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Provides a detailed report of patient activity for the night shift charge nurse.
  • Demonstrates ability to handle high acuity and stressful situations
  • When the situation demands have the ability to assume care of patients in both the NICU and Paediatric Unit.

Job Qualifications:

Education:

  1. Current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario
  2. Bachelor’s Degree essential, Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BScN) preferred
  3. BCLS certification required
  4. NRP and instructor certification required
  5. PALS certification required
  6. Perinatal Nursing Certificate or PNCC copyright required
  7. Paediatric assessment course or equivalent required
  8. Current BFI Breast Feeding Course required
  9. Successful completion of a recognized leadership diploma/Certificate or equivalent preferred

Experience:

  1. Current nursing experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Paediatrics unit essential
  2. Current nursing experience in Birthing Unit and postpartum unit preferred
  3. Team Leader/Recourse Nurse/Charge Nurse experience essential
  4. Demonstrated commitment to continuous quality improvement and customer service 
  5. Current or recent experience related to mentorship or education of novice staff in NICU or Paediatrics staff
