An exciting opportunity for an experienced nursing professional to drive and champion health protection strategies and priorities as part of a progressive public health leader
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU), one of 36 Public Health Units operating in Ontario, is a not-for-profit agency funded jointly by the provincial government and local municipalities, and committed to improving health and reducing social inequities in health through evidence-informed practice. TBDHU responds to community health needs by providing health information and prevention-related clinical services to people of all ages, advocating for healthy public policy, protecting the public by investigating reportable diseases, and upholding regulations in the public health realm.
TBDHU is seeking a Director of Health Protection who, reporting to the Medical Officer of Health and CEO, will provide effective leadership, management and supervision for the Division, including the delivery of programs and services aligned with provincial legislation, Ontario Public Health Standards and TBDHU policies. As Director, you will also act as Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), with a mandate to advance professional nursing practice at TBDHU, primarily by providing leadership to the Nursing Practice Council and Professional Practice Lead position.
This role will see you becoming a key member of the senior management team and, as such, contribute to excellence in organizational leadership, and participate actively in cooperative planning and decision-making activities, and the establishment of the Health Unit’s overall strategic direction and priorities. In addition to ensuring the implementation and monitoring of the strategic direction for the Health Protection Division as well as across the organization, you may be called upon to lead particular initiatives in the organization related to priorities or organizational issues.
A visionary leader with no fewer than 10 years’ progressive nursing experience, preferably in public health or community health, you are well prepared to oversee and manage quality assurance and improvement initiatives related to nursing practice, and to support organizational effectiveness through professional practice. Your baccalaureate degree in Nursing is complemented by a graduate degree in Nursing, Community Health, Public Health, Health Promotion, Health Administration, or equivalent, and proven success in senior management in a public health, community health or other health care setting.
This mandate will call into play your financial management, budgeting, change management and strategic plan implementation skills as much as your knowledge of a population health approach, determinants of health, health equity and other applicable public health strategies and practices. You are committed to continuous improvement, know how to manage conflict and build consensus in a team environment, and are prepared to address complex public health issues. A relationship builder at the local, regional and provincial levels, you welcome the opportunity to develop effective alliances and partnerships. Knowledge and training in Indigenous cultural competency is preferred.
